A total of 48 seats

The state elections in Styria 2015 took place on May 31st. The election ended with massive losses for the two large parties SPÖ and ÖVP and corresponding large gains for the FPÖ.

Starting position

On March 5, 2015, the ÖVP regional party chairman and deputy governor Hermann Schützenhöfer announced that he would again run as the top candidate of his party. State governor and SPÖ state party chairman Franz Voves had previously announced his re-candidacy. He also wanted to continue as a runner-up, but would step down for the SPÖ if less than 30 percent. The Stronach team announced in February 2015 that they would run with Wolfgang Auer as the top candidate, who was replaced by Josef Kaltenegger in April 2015.

The following parties ran for election:

The pirate party ran only in the constituency of Graz and the surrounding area, the remaining seven lists nationwide.

Candidates

A total of 480 people ran for this year's state elections in Styria. The proportion of women in 282 candidates and 198 female candidates was 41.25%. With 59% women, the Greens' nominations not only looked significantly more feminine than those of their competitors, the Greens were also the only one of the eight lists in which more women than men ran. With regard to the average age of the candidates, the differences between the parties were much smaller. It is noticeable that the Pirate Party provided the youngest team by far, with men on average 32 years old. At the other end of the scale are the Greens, whose candidates came to an average age of 49 years.

consequences

After brief party negotiations, Governor Franz Voves announced on June 10, 2015 that he was leaving all political functions and that the SPÖ-ÖVP coalition would continue for the coming legislative period. His successor as governor was surprisingly his previous deputy Hermann Schützenhöfer from the smaller coalition partner ÖVP. He was followed at the head of the SPÖ by the previous regional councilor and new regional governor Michael Schickhofer . In the SPÖ, the renunciation of the post of governor as a stronger coalition participant at federal and state level was criticized. The opposition parties FPÖ, Greens and KPÖ also rated the continuation of the existing government cooperation negatively despite electoral losses. The reason given for the abandonment of the governor by the SPÖ was the risk of losing influence entirely through an ÖVP-FPÖ coalition.

The previous state councils of the ÖVP Christian Buchmann , Christopher Drexler and Johann Seitinger remain unchanged in the state government Schützenhöfer I , elected on June 16, 2015 by the state parliament with the votes of the SPÖ and ÖVP, against the votes of the opposition from the FPÖ, the Greens and the KPÖ . The SPÖ is renewing its state government team with Doris Kampus , Ursula Lackner , previously the second state parliament president, and Jörg Leichtfried , previously a member of the EU.
