On March 12, 1961, state elections were held in Styria .

The ÖVP expanded its leadership position with slight gains, the SPÖ lost slightly. Josef Krainer senior (ÖVP) thus consolidated his position as governor.

The ÖVP achieved 47.1% (24 seats), the SPÖ got 41.7% of the votes and thus 20 seats. The third strongest party remained the FPÖ with 7.2% (3 seats), the Communists and Left Socialists ( KPÖ ) achieved one seat with 3.8%.

The election of the Independent Party came as the list Ergo only in the constituency Graz, both lists missed with 0.08% and 0.05% a place in the Diet clear.
