State election in Styria 2005
On October 2, 2005 a state election took place in the Austrian state of Styria . For the first time in 60 years there was a change of power in the country. The previous ruling ÖVP under Governor Mrs. Waltraud Klasnic lost to one dominated by heavy scandals election campaign, the majority of the Social Democratic Party under Franz Voves that new Governor was. Also historic is the re-entry of the KPÖ Ernest Kaltenegger into the state parliament after 35 years with the highest Styrian election result of the KPÖ ever. Contrary to expectations, the Greens suffered slight losses, but were able to keep their three previous mandates. The remaining parties up for election, the FPÖ , the Haider alliance BZÖ and the Hirschmann list of ÖVP dissident Gerhard Hirschmann did not make it into the Styrian state parliament. The non- party list that only appeared in Graz was unsuccessful.
The new state parliament was constituted on October 25, 2005 and elected the Styrian state government in its new composition. The inauguration by Federal President Heinz Fischer took place on October 28th.
