On October 4, 1981, state elections were held in Styria .

The ÖVP won this new election and was able to hold an absolute majority despite a slight loss of votes, Josef Krainer junior (ÖVP) was elected governor.

The ÖVP achieved 50.9% and thus 30 seats, the SPÖ won slightly and received 42.7% (24 seats). The FPÖ lost votes and achieved only two mandates with 5.1%.

The KPÖ failed to make it into the state parliament again with 1.34%.
