State elections were held in Styria on February 22, 1953 .

For the first time since 1945, the ÖVP lost the status of the party with the most votes to the SPÖ , but it was one mandate before the SPÖ. That is why Josef Krainer senior (ÖVP) was able to keep his post as governor.

The ÖVP achieved 40.7% (21 seats), the SPÖ got 41.1% of the votes (but only 20 seats), the WDU was able to hold third place with 13.6% (6 seats). The KPÖ ran for the "Popular Opposition" list and won a mandate with 4.5%. The Christian Social Party took part in the Styrian state elections for the first time, but with 0.2% clearly missed entry into the state parliament.
