Hermann Schützenhöfer
Hermann Schützenhöfer (born February 29, 1952 in Edlitz , Lower Austria ) is an Austrian politician ( ÖVP ). He has been governor of Styria since 2015 and party chairman of ÖVP Styria since 2006 .
Life
Schützenhöfer grew up in the Edlitz vicarage, where his father was employed as a forest worker. He was an altar boy at the age of four and is still closely associated with the Catholic Church today and describes himself as a Christian social. After compulsory schooling in Edlitz, Schützenhöfer moved with his family to Styria and completed the Polytechnic in Kirchbach in Styria . In Kirchbach he completed a commercial apprenticeship in a grocery shop and also wrote as a local journalist for the Kleine Zeitung , the Sonntagspost and the Styrian youth magazine Horizont - an organ of the JVP .
In 1970 Schützenhöfer got into politics and became Styrian JVP State Secretary, Styrian JVP Chairman in 1976 and State Secretary of the ÖAAB in 1978. In the mid-1980s he made headlines because he advocated a comprehensive school and thus spoke out against the ÖVP party line in educational policy. In 1984 he called for a minimum wage for everyone and thus caused renewed criticism within the party.
Schützenhöfer has been an honorary member of the Catholic student association K.Ö.HV Carolina Graz in the ÖCV since 2003 . Furthermore, since 2007 he has been an honorary member of the Catholic school association K.Ö.St.V. Markomannia-Eppenstein Graz and since 2010 the K.Ö.ML Normannia-Graz, both in the MKV .
His political breakthrough came on 3 October 2005, when he lost after the state election , the party leadership of the Popular Party in the Styrian Parliament of Waltraud Klasnic took over and as a result, the first Deputy Governor was. On March 18, 2006, he was elected chairman of the Styrian People's Party with 98.63%. From 1995 to 2006 he was regional chairman of the Styrian ÖAAB . Since October 2007 Hermann Schützenhofer has been President of the Styrian Association of Scouts and Girl Scouts in Austria .
After the state elections in Styria in 2010 , in which the ÖVP came within one percent of the SPÖ's share of the vote , coalition negotiations were agreed with the SPÖ. A government agreement, which was also referred to as a “reform partnership” at a press conference, was reached, and Hermann Schützenhöfer took over the post of 1st deputy governor again on October 21, 2010 at the constituent session of the new state parliament. In the state government of Voves II , he was responsible for the areas of human resources, ÖVP communities and supervision of communities with non-ÖVP mayors, tourism, folk culture and regional and community development.
After the state elections in Styria in 2015 , in which the “reform partners” SPÖ and ÖVP suffered significant losses, governor Franz Voves (SPÖ) , who had been in office since 2005, resigned. Schützenhöfer was elected as governor for the years 2015 to 2020 by the state parliament on June 16, 2015 , in the coalition government consisting of SPÖ and ÖVP under the name “Zukunft Steiermark” , but early elections were scheduled for November 24, 2019. On December 17, 2019, the state government Schützenhöfer II was elected and sworn in.
