Edlitz is a market town with 894 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Neunkirchen district in Lower Austria .

Edlitz is located in the Bucklige Welt in the industrial district near Aspang Markt . The area of ​​the market town covers 14.23 square kilometers. Exactly 50 percent of the area is forested.

history

Antiquity and the Middle Ages

In ancient times, the area was part of the Noricum province .

The first settlements in this area were due to the abundance of water in the Pitten valley and the frequent flooding associated with it, a little out of the way in the elevated side valleys. A find of Roman coins suggests that the transition area from the Edlitztal to the Pittental was already settled in Roman times. From the Middle Ages, the history of the place is very closely linked to the development of the church and the parish.

The parish seat "de Edelz" was first mentioned in 1192 when it was separated from the mother parish of Bromberg and an independent parish was established.

Origin of the place name

The origin of the place name is not clear. There are two theories of origin:

• One refers to the wording of a Latin deed of donation from the year 860, in which forty manors were donated to the Archdiocese of Salzburg, some of which were in the area of ​​the Bucklige Welt. One of them was “ad ecclesiam Ellodis” (“by the Church of Ello”). Ello is a Germanic name that translates as "the noble one". From this, "de Edelz" would mean "settlement of a noble".
• A second - more well-known theory - says that the name "Edlitz" is derived from the Slavic "jedlica" ("Tannenbach"), which can be traced back to the wooded surroundings of the place.

Invasions by Hungarians, Turks and Kurucs

In the following centuries Edlitz was hit by numerous invasions by the Hungarians and later by the Turks . There were also epidemics again and again, which also claimed their victims: In the plague year of 1349, a plague cemetery even had to be created for the many dead.

The place managed to avoid an attack by the Turks in 1529, when the Turks were approaching, but startled by the noon ringing of the bells, but turned back again.

In 1608, Pastor Georg Hayden was abducted by Hungarian hordes to Güns and only released 6 weeks after paying a ransom of 200 guilders. In gratitude he donates the frescoes in the chancel of the parish church.

In 1590 Edlitz is first referred to as a market, which at that time had 14 houses.

War attacks in the area of ​​Edlitz are reported twice, namely in 1620 by Hungary and in 1707 by Kuruzen . Presumably the fortifications of the church were used as hiding places during this time.

Transport routes and tourism

At the end of the 18th century Edlitz again took an important place in the economic and transport life of the Bucklige Welt. A land description carried out by Emperor Joseph II wrote about the place Edlitz at that time: “A mediocre solidly built market in a ditch also has a solid church, surrounded by churchyard walls.” That a place was then “solid”, that is was made of stone is by no means a given.

Most of the villages in the Bucklige Welt at that time consisted of wooden huts, which is reflected in the numerous fire disasters in the various local chronicles.

For Edlitz the water posed a great threat again and again. The place was often hit by floods from the Edlitzbach. After the unlucky year of 1886, when one person died, the brook was secured by a generous torrent control.

The 19th century brought a significant improvement in traffic conditions when, in 1815, Count Palffy had the Reitersteg from Grimmenstein to Edlitz and on via Thomasberg to Kirchschlag to Güns to be extended to the country road. Today the federal road runs along this former Palffy Street.

In 1881 the opening of the Aspangbahn brought the new era to Bucklige Welt . The Edlitz train station was built outside the municipal boundaries because the building site in Grimmenstein, which was then called “Am Treitl”, was cheaper. Today the Edlitz-Grimmenstein train station is located in the municipality of Thomasberg.

The opening of the rail link also marked the beginning of tourism in Edlitz. Guests from Vienna in particular liked to come to Bucklige Welt for a summer break.

In 1972 Edlitz counted a total of 32,000 overnight stays. Today tourism is still an important economic factor for the municipality, but the number of overnight stays is nowhere near as high. In recent years, the main focus of the community has been on improving the infrastructure in the areas of road construction, water supply, sewer, kindergarten, fire brigade and office building.

• Catholic parish church Edlitz hl. Veit: Edlitz is home to one of the most interesting fortified churches in the Bucklige Welt. The origins of the church date from the second half of the 12th century. Almost square in plan with four cross-vaulted yokes, supported in the middle by a mighty pillar, the nave is the dominant structural element. The bell tower almost disappears behind the high roof of the church. When the nave was rebuilt in 1492, the sacred building was equipped with fortified structures. The fortifications still exist today: cast bay windows, loopholes, upper floor in the attic with a block chamber, former cistern under the church floor. The last exterior renovation took place in 1978, the interior of the church was last renovated in 1984 (interior renovation, exposure of various versions of stone ribs and paintings, restoration of high altar, pulpit, stations of the cross and figures of saints) and 2003 (redesign of the chancel). In autumn 2005 the roof was re-covered. The Edlitz parish church has five bells, the oldest from Lazlo Raczko from 1518, another from 1757, all others were purchased in 1948.
• The vicarage formed a unit with the fortified church courtyard. The oldest surviving part is marked by a gate that provided access independently of the churchyard. A small stone plaque set into the wall above the gate bears the year 1463 and the name Oswald in Latin letters. Around the church you can still find the remains of the former churchyard defensive walls.

On both sides of the road from Edlitz to Krumbach, there are small deposits of lignite, but these are not worth mining.
