The area was fought over for centuries as the eastern border of the empire. The Ottomans, for example, came from the Hungarian lowlands via the Bucklige Welt to what is now Lower Austria. The area around Kirchschlag also represented the border with Hungary until 1921. Hungarian irregulars fought in the "Battle of Kirchschlag" on September 5, 1921 against the Austrian Armed Forces against the incorporation of German West Hungary into Austria as Burgenland.
