Small regions in Lower Austria
Small regions are voluntary cooperations between municipalities in the federal state of Lower Austria in the areas of services of general interest , citizen service and municipal and regional spatial development .
Tasks and goals of the small regions
Since the late 1980s, the formation of small regions - in addition to the five main regions and the neighborhoods - as cooperation between political communities on a voluntary basis has been encouraged and promoted in the Austrian state of Lower Austria . The central fields of activity of a small region are services of general interest , administration and spatial development. Its aim is to improve the citizen service through cooperation in sovereign and private-sector tasks of the municipalities (e.g. garbage disposal, leisure and local recreation), to implement regional projects across municipalities and to coordinate spatial planning projects.
Small regions are "voluntary amalgamations of six or more spatially adjoining municipalities with a minimum population of 8,000 inhabitants or at least three municipalities with 12,000 inhabitants." They should "be coherent in terms of area and have no white spots ."
The Regional Planning and Regional Policy department of the Lower Austrian provincial government promotes the small regions. Since 2015, the small regions have been looked after by the Lower Austria Regional GmbH , which reports to the State Council for Economy, Tourism and Sport (2015: Petra Bohuslav).
