The main region Weinviertel is one of the main regions (five "quarters") of the spatial planning of Lower Austria, and is organized in the regional association Europaregion Weinviertel , the association of the municipalities and municipal associations of these municipalities, the Leader regions and other regionally important representatives. It belongs to the Euregio Weinviertel-South Moravia-West Slovakia .
In the course of joining the EU , the regional association was established in 1995. Since 2015, the association's operational work has been transferred to the newly created NÖ.Regional.GmbH of the state, in which the regional association holds 6%, with the Lower Austrian Village and Urban Renewal Association of all municipalities as a partner.
As such, the region corresponds to the traditional Weinviertel , without the communities of the Tulln district north of the Danube and the communities east of the Manhartsberg, which belong to the Horn district . This main Weinviertel region includes:
- Districts Gänserndorf , Hollabrunn , Korneuburg and Mistelbach (complete)
The small regions of the Weinviertel are (as of 2016, with number):

- Retzer Land (14, 7 municipalities)
- Weinviertler Dreiländereck (16, 11 municipalities)
- Schmidatal Landscape Park (17, 4 communities)
- Land around Hollabrunn (20, 6 municipalities, dissolved in 2016)
- Leiser Berge – Mistelbach (33, 6 communities)
- Southern Weinviertel (35, 13 municipalities)
- 10 before Vienna (44, 10 municipalities)
- Land around Laa (46, 11 municipalities)
- RV March-Thaya-Auen (47, 6 communities)
- Region around Wolkersdorf (48, 6 communities)
- Marchfeld region (56, municipalities)
- Maissau and Mühlbach am Manhartsberg belong to the small region Manhartsberg (58, 8 municipalities) in the main region Waldviertel
- Stetteldorf am Wagram belongs to the Wagram region (24, 9 municipalities), which is mainly part of Lower Lower Austria .
In the Lower Austria nature conservation concept , the main region is divided into the regions
- 6, highlands near Hardegg and eastern Thayatal
- 7, northwestern Weinviertel ,
- 8, northeastern Weinviertel,
- 9, southwest Weinviertel,
- 10, Southeastern Weinviertel and
- 11, Donau-March-Thayaauen and Marchfeld.
The Natura 2000 areas in Lower Austria are each completely assigned to one of the five main regions of the state development concept and processed in a structured manner according to a uniform scheme. The following European protected areas exist in the main Weinviertel region:
