The northwestern Weinviertel is defined in the Lower Austria nature conservation concept as a region within the main Weinviertel region . The size is given there with approx. 943 km². The regional breakdown is an instrument of spatial planning in the Province of Lower Austria .

It is made up of the scenic sub-areas Buchberg, Ernstbrunner Wald , Laaer Bucht , Pulkau - Retzer Hügelland, Wullersdorfer Hügelland and the 21% of the Eggenburg Basin that politically belong to the Hollabrunn district .

description

The area is characterized by intensive agriculture, but in some cases viticulture is also practiced. Soils that are not suitable for intensive cultivation are the extensive Ernstbrunn Forest, the area around the Buchberg and the outskirts of the Waldviertel. These are forested and offer complex arid habitat complexes. Viticulture can be found particularly in the transition zone from the forest to the agricultural areas, for example between Retz and Eggenburg or north of the Buchberg and the Ernstbrunn Forest. The agricultural areas are also planted with field trees and hedges and offer habitats for numerous endangered animal and plant species.

Protected areas

In the region lies the nature reserve Zwemmenorfer Glauber's salt floors and the nature reserve Upper Pulkautal and Retzer Hügelland . Partly in the region are the European protected areas FFH area (AT1209A00) Western Weinviertel and the bird sanctuary (AT1209000) Western Weinviertel.
