Eggenburg Basin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Eggenburg Basin (also: Eggenburger Bucht ) is a basin on the eastern flank of the Waldviertel through which the Schmida flows today.

The basin forms a transition zone between the Waldviertel and the Weinviertel , which is characterized by its biological diversity. In addition to rock formations, dry habitat complexes, wet meadow areas, rivers and streams with gallery forests , the basin is also part of an important breeding area for the great bustard . As a former sea beach or surf, it is also rich in marine deposits from the Lower Miocene ; even the time stage of the Eggenburgium (20 million years ago) was named after it.

The Eggenburg Basin was designated as a separate sub-area in the Lower Austria nature conservation concept in 1999 .
