Maissau is an Austrian municipality with 1935 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Hollabrunn district in Lower Austria .
geography
Maissau is located at the transition from the Weinviertel to the Waldviertel at the foot of the Manhartsberg . The area of the municipality covers 43.14 square kilometers. 28.03 percent of the area is forested. The Gscheinzbach rises between Klein-Burgstall and Eggendorf am Walde , which drains into the Kamp and north of Eggendorf, the Ravelsbach , Dürnbach , Schleinzbach and Straningbach rivers, which drain into the Schmida.
Community structure
For financial and economic considerations, the municipality amalgamation (done NE. Local structural improvement ) of Maissau with Gumping on 1 January 1968. On 1 January 1970, the integration of the former municipalities Oberdürnbach, Wilhelmsdorf, Reikersdorf and small-Burgstall took place and on January 1, 1972 those with Limberg, Unterdürnbach, Grübern, Eggendorf am Walde.

history
The earliest mention of Maissau was in the year 1114. In the Klosterneuburg tradition code it is mentioned that the castellan Otto von Mödling donated his estate in Maissau to the Klosterneuburg monastery.
Population development
The population has been increasing since 1981 due to a strongly positive balance of migration , although the birth balance is negative.

- Maissau Castle : The complex, first mentioned in a document in 1122, is used privately today and can only be viewed from the outside.
- Amethystworld Maissau : Maissau has the largest amethyst deposit in Europe . An exposed amethyst gallery can be visited here.

economy
In 2010 there were 93 agricultural and forestry holdings, 56 of which were full-time farms. In 1999 there were 131 companies with 71 in full-time employment. Fifteen factories employed 120 people in the manufacturing sector. Around half of them worked in the construction industry, around a quarter each in the manufacture of goods and in mining. The service sector gave jobs to 356 people in 104 companies. A third of them worked in trade, a second third in social and public services (as of 2011).
traffic
- Train: Maissau is on the Franz Josefs Bahn . There are direct connections to Vienna, Gmünd and Ceske Velenice from Limberg-Maissau train station .
- Street: In the municipality, Retzer Straße B35 branches off from Horner Straße B4, which is also part of Europastraße 49 .
education
There are three kindergartens and one elementary school in the municipality.
health
Several general practitioners and specialists ordain in Maissau, and there is also a pharmacy in town.
Personalities
- Josef Naderer (1906–1965), wine wholesaler, politician and member of the Lower Austrian state parliament
- Gottfried von Eine (1918–1996), Austrian composer and Righteous Among the Nations, lived and died in Oberdürnbach near Maissau
