The Amethyst World Maissau is a museum with a connected theme and leisure park in Maissau in Lower Austria , which over one of the world's largest, accessible Amethyst - veins was built.

history

Already in 1845 a large vein of amethyst was discovered by chance during quarry work, but it was not until 1986 and 1994 that the Krahuletz Society Eggenburg funded several scientific excavations in this area, during which several large amethysts were found. The mayor Alfred Winkler (1987–2000), who was in office at the time, recognized the possibility of promoting cultural and tourism development in the region due to this geological peculiarity, and commissioned several related studies.

In 1999 “Maissauer Amethyst GmbH” was founded with the municipality of Maissau as the main shareholder. From September 1999 systematic soil investigations and exploratory excavations revealed a secured course of the amethyst vein of approx. 400 m, whereby a total thickness of the worldwide unique ribbon amethyst of about one kilometer can be assumed. A year later, it was decided to build the “Amethyst World”, a complete complex of museum, adventure and leisure park. In the same year, the first visitors were able to gain experience in the field of gemstone search and mining technology in a newly created “treasure hunt field” . (The "treasure hunt field" is next to the vein and contains only imported amethysts.)

Construction began in May 2002, the completion of the first phase of construction in the fall of 2003 and the completion of the overall project consisting of Schaustollen , central Amethystpavillon with showrooms and multimedia show, force garden and Amethystpark for mystics and adventure playground with affiliated restaurants in late 2004 took place in February 2005 the grand opening of the “Amethystwelt Maissau” by Governor Erwin Pröll . A year later the chakra path was also completed.

In December 2009, planning began for the construction of the new gem house, which was completed in May 2012. The new gem house in the amethyst world expands the range and presents gemstones in a form never before shown. From an introduction to mineralogy to the search for gemstones and minerals from all over the world, the path from the development of rough stones to cut gemstones to the finished piece of jewelry is shown.

The jewelry workshop in the Amethyst World shop, which was completed in May 2013, presents its own jewelry lines from the Amethyst World. Various goldsmiths work there at certain times and show the processing of pieces of jewelery, advise on jewelery and colored gemstones.

On January 3, 2018, the company filed for insolvency due to insolvency, also due to a lack of visitor numbers. According to a report by ORF Lower Austria , operations should continue.
