history

Designation "1570" above the portal on the south facade

A castle owned by the Zinken was mentioned in a document as early as 1294 in Limberg. This " Veste Limburg zu Limberg " was located in an elevated position near the parish church and was already in ruins in the 16th century. It was completely or partially surrounded by water. The portfolio of the Franziszeische cadastre from 1823 shows a large pond at this point, which was later filled with the remains of the ruined castle.

At the site of today's castle there was probably a manor house or noble seat belonging to the castle , which was expanded into a castle around 1570.

In 1755 the property went to Altenburg Abbey and served as a reading courtyard in the middle of an orchard. The current owner bought it from the monastery.

Insight into the yard

Outside

The two-storey, two-storey four-wing complex with brick hipped roofs and a tower was expanded around 1570. An inscription above the portal on the south facade shows this year. The castle was originally enclosed by a defensive wall, only parts of which have survived today.

The southern nine-axis main front is symmetrized by a laterally protruding extension and structured by a cornice between the floors. The windows on the upper floor have cornice roofs and some sills . Above the gothic portal from the first quarter of the 19th century, part of the final meander frieze has been preserved below the eaves. A sundial from the second half of the 18th century is located between the first and second window axis on the upper floor.

The south wing is dominated by a tower with a slender pyramid roof , red ashlar ashlars from the early 17th century and a final baroque top with cross oval hatches under the roof from the second half of the 18th century.

On the other facades there are renewed, painted cast stone blocks and square cordon ribbons in red from around 1700.

On three sides of the courtyard there are colonnades under open monopitch roofs from the 16th century, in the west on late Gothic consoles of the first building core, in the south on niche arcades and in the east as a two-storey colonnade with beamed ceiling.

Inside

The passage is vaulted by cross vaults with stuccoed ridges, the adjoining area of the first building core has a barrel vault. On the courtyard side, the passage is closed off by a round arch portal on a late Gothic beveled pillar.

On the ground floor there are still barrels with stucco caps from the first building core (beginning of the 16th century) with stucco ridges. In the stairway to the tower there are remains of a fresco from the beginning of the 16th century depicting a crucifix with an assistant figure.
