Katzelsdorf (also Katzelsdorf an der Leitha ) is a municipality with 3210 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the industrial district of Lower Austria , directly southeast of Wiener Neustadt .

geography

Katzelsdorf lies at the interface of the Steinfeld , Thermenregion and Bucklige Welt regions at the foot of the Rosaliengebirge . The Leitha and the Mühlbach Canal flow through Katzelsdorf .

history

Before the birth of Christ, the area was part of the Celtic Kingdom of Noricum and belonged to the surroundings of the Celtic hill settlement Burg on the Schwarzenbacher Burgberg . Later under the Romans , today's Katzelsdorf was in the province of Pannonia .

At a ford through the Leitha, three groups of barrows were created (one already located in Burgenland), one of which was destroyed during the construction of the Mattersburg expressway . This Iron Age necropolis was located in the border forest of the former Austro-Hungarian border and was therefore preserved undisturbed for a long time. One barrow with cremation is dated to the more recent Hallstatt period , two with body burial to the Middle Latène period and five with cremation to the early Roman period. Other early Roman urn graves, some with grave surrounds and gravestones (a Vala is named), are also in this area. In one of the graves of the Latène period lay a man armed with a sword and lance, whose skull shows a triple trepanation . The third piece of bone of the trefoil-shaped trephination did not break out, which is why it was concluded that the operation was fatal.

Katzelsdorf was first mentioned in 1183 as Cazelinisdorf , the name probably goes back to the male name Chazilo or Chezilin.

Katzelsdorf Castle was built in the 12th century and owes its current form to Wolf Mathias Freiherr von Königsberg . It has been owned by the municipality since 1994 and serves as a center for numerous festivals and cultural events.

Eichbüchl Castle was built in the 14th century . In 1945 the first government proclamation of the Second Republic was made here under Karl Renner . Eichbüchl Castle is privately owned and today serves as a meeting place for music lovers.

The monastery and parish church were founded by the Franciscans in the 15th century . In 1857 it went to the Redemptorists . They founded a high school here .

In the course of armed conflicts the place was repeatedly affected, for example in 1463 by grazing mercenaries of Jörg von Vöttau, in 1487 by the Magyars and in 1532 and 1683 by the Ottomans .

In 1888 the village of Eichbüchl was incorporated.

During the Second World War , the area around Katzelsdorf Castle served as the largest horse hospital on the Eastern Front . Between the Redemptorist monastery and the basement there was a camp of the Reich Labor Service , which was demolished after the war. Katzelsdorf was also badly affected in the bombing of Wiener Neustadt .

In 1971 Edwin Lipburger put a ball house on a meadow near Landesstraße 4091 and proclaimed the Kugelmugel republic . After violent arguments with the District Court of Wiener Neustadt, Lipburger even had to be behind bars for 10 weeks. In 1982 the ball was moved to the Vienna Prater .

On November 26th 2003, Hannelore Handler-Woltran was elected mayor for the first time in the history of Katzelsdorf.

The municipality of Katzelsdorf was awarded a municipal coat of arms by resolution of the Lower Austrian state government on October 6, 1981.

Blazon : "In an arched shield, above a half silver sun, from which three red rays run to the edge of the shield, below in green a silver castle reinforced with two red-roofed towers and an indicated gate."

At the same time, the “red-white-green” colors set by the Katzelsdorf municipal council were approved.

According to the 2001 census data , 78.9% of the population are Roman Catholic and 4.7% Protestant . 0.9% are Muslims , 0.9% belong to Orthodox churches and 0.1% are Israelite . 12.7% of the population have no religious denomination.

Museums

On September 4, 2004, the Pewter Figure World Katzelsdorf was opened in the last building of the former horse hospital in its original state . With around 30,000 tin figures on display, it is the largest tin figure museum in Austria .

In Katzelsdorf there are two kindergartens , a primary school and a music school, as well as a private high school with public rights ( Klemens-Maria-Hofbauer -Gymnasium; formerly: Redemptorist grammar school).

Leisure and sports facilities

With two soccer fields, a tennis court and a multi-purpose facility, Katzelsdorf offers the opportunity to practice numerous sports. There is also a riding arena, numerous riding and hiking trails as well as the fitness course invite you to go on excursions to the Leitha-Au and the Rosaliengebirge . Cyclists will find an extensive network of cycle paths in Katzelsdorf and the surrounding area.

In snowy winters, a cross-country ski run is groomed in the Leitha-Au.
