The publishing house was founded in January 1973 with the aim of disseminating new scientific research findings nationally and internationally. Research activities within the framework of the Austrian Academy of Sciences are given priority . This covers a broad field, from the humanities and natural sciences to social sciences and law . According to the publisher, over 700 scientists from over 30 nations currently write for the publisher each year .
Most recently, Helmut Birkhan's Celts, The Roman Limes in Austria by Friesinger / Krinzinger and the publication of Arthur Schnitzler's diaries were noticed by a broader public .
The publisher currently produces books , magazines , CD-ROMs , audio CDs and, increasingly, online publications such as e-books and e-journals .
The number of new publications every year is 70 to 80, the backlist over 2700 available titles.
70% of the production is exported directly to a total of 42 countries around the world.
