The Mattersburger Schnellstraße S4 is an expressway in Austria which connects the south motorway A2 at the Wiener Neustadt junction with the Burgenland Schnellstraße S31 at the Mattersburg junction . The S4 is subject to a vignette or toll .

Route sections

Between the Wiener Neustadt junction and the Wiener Neustadt-Süd junction, the S4 is a motorway . The further route to the Mattersburg junction is designed as a four-lane car road without any structural center separation or hard shoulder. There is a TOTSO intersection at the Wiener Neustadt-Ost junction. If you want to drive east on the S4 from the west you have to turn right. If you continue straight ahead you will come to the intersection with the B53 between Wiener Neustadt and Neudörfl .

The S4 was originally supposed to lead under the name Eisenstädter Schnellstraße from Wiener Neustadt via Mattersburg, Eisenstadt and Neusiedl am See to the Czechoslovak border near Bratislava . The course has been corrected and now exists for a length of approx. 17 km between Wiener Neustadt and Mattersburg under the name Mattersburger Schnellstraße . The other sections to Bratislava were partly realized as Burgenland expressway S31 or north-east motorway A6. However, there is no expressway connection between Eisenstadt and Neusiedl.

On December 19, 1964, the first section from the Wiener Neustadt junction to the Wiener Neustadt-Süd junction was opened in half-expansion (one lane in each direction) and only served as a feeder to the A2 . The completion of the full extension took place in 1975. On April 1, 1983, the line from Mattersburg to Sigleß and 1985 to Bad Sauerbrunn was opened on the eastern side . The gap was closed on November 3, 1986, with which the S4 was completed in its current length.

Between April and October 2009, the S4 between Mattersburg and the Sigleß junction was subjected to extensive renovation and expansion measures. Between November 2009 and October 2010 this work between Sigleß and Wiener Neustadt was continued and completed. It was criticized that, although the road was widened overall, the lanes were not separated, although this was originally intended. In preparation for the separation of the carriageway, the general renovation of the Mattersburg junction will take place by the end of August 2018. Construction is to begin in autumn 2020 for the necessary separation of the carriageway and the top speed will be increased from the current 100 km / h to 130 km / h.
