  • The Innkreis Autobahn A 8 is a motorway in Upper Austria and part of the European roads 56 and 552 . It begins at the Voralpenkreuz junction as a continuation of the Pyhrn Autobahn (A 9) and runs over a length of approx. 77 kilometers via Wels ( A 25 ) through the Innkreis to the state border at Suben , where it connects to the German federal motorway 3 in the direction of Passau .

    history

The stretch from Wels-West to Suben was completed in the 1980s. The last 11 kilometers from the Voralpenkreuz junction to Wels-West (the Welser Westspange ) were opened in 2003 after years of construction delays due to ecological concerns. The opening years in detail:

    opening Route section length
08/27/1982 ASt Pichl - Wels node 4,338 km
06/30/1983 ASt Suben - State border Suben 2.232 km
11/21/1985 Ried im Innkreis node - Suben branch 20.533 km
11/21/1985 Ried im Innkreis node - ASt Walchshausen 1.410 km
06/30/1987 ASt Wels West - Node Wels 3.942 km
    October 29, 1987 ASt Pichl-Bad Schallerbach - ASt Meggenhofen-Gallspach 10.961 km
    11/21/1988 ASt Meggenhofen-Gallspach - ASt Haag 11.946 km
06/20/1990 ASt Haag - Ried im Innkreis node 10.902 km
08/24/2003 ASt Wels West - Pre-Alpine Cross node 11.178 km

Between 2008 and 2017, the lanes and hard shoulders were widened in those sections of the motorway that were originally made cheaper

The Wels motorway junction has a TOTSO traffic route. To continue in the direction of Voralpenkreuz coming from Passau, you have to leave the main lane, as the A 8 joins the A 25 here.

Motorway junction near Ried im Innkreis

The Ried im Innkreis junction is designed as a motorway junction. This is an advance payment for an unrealized planning of an expressway from Munich via Simbach and Braunau to Ried, which was to be run on the Austrian side as the Innviertel expressway  (S9). The route, known on the German side as Bundesautobahn 94 , is still only available as a fragment. In the meantime, Austria decided not to burden the region with transit traffic, which ultimately meant that the original plan was abandoned. The motorway would have significantly reduced the travel time between Vienna and Munich without going through Salzburg. More recent plans on the German side envisage connecting the A 94 to the federal motorway 3 shortly before the Austrian border near Pocking .
