List of motorways and expressways in Austria

The Austrian motorway and expressway network
High-ranking road network in Austria
Note on mandatory tolls before driveways

This list of motorways and expressways in Austria gives an overview of the high-level road network in Austria.

Operating length

As of January 1, 2010, Austria had 1,719 km of motorways and 466 km of expressways , of which around 288 km had a motorway cross-section. In addition, around 56 km of motorways and 226 km of expressways were under construction or planned.

tunnel

Of the 182 tunnel systems with a total of 340.895 km of tunnel tubes, 174 km have two tubes. As an effective means of increasing traffic safety, several second tunnels are currently being built. Up to 2010, around 842 million euros had been invested in improving the safety equipment and expanding the tunnels. As of January 1, 2010, a further 117.572 km of tunnel tubes were under construction or in the planning stage.

numbering

According to the Federal Roads Act , the requirements for a federal road A (motorway) and a federal road S (expressway) are the same. In addition to the numbering, motorways and expressways have names with a regional reference (e.g. Inntal -Autobahn and Semmering- Schnellstraße ), which are announced during traffic announcements in addition to the respective street numbers. These names are not found on the traffic signs, but they are well known.

Internally, on the Asfinag websites - unlike in the Federal Roads Act - the federal highways are also designated with the letter-number combination without spaces ( e.g. A1 for the West Autobahn) or with continuous two-digit numbers ( e.g. A09 for the Pyhrn Autobahn).

Signposting of the exits

The designation of the motorway exits is based on the kilometrage, so Exit 72 is not the 72nd exit, but is located (approximately) at km 72 of the road in question. Crossing points between several motorways or expressways are called nodes , whereby in Austria no distinction is made between motorway intersection , motorway triangle or motorway fork (diction and symbolism in Germany). The designation "EXIT xx" was introduced around the 1980s and thus later than in (West) Germany and much later than in the USA.

Around 1970 signs for signposting were generally only to the right of the directional lane. Overviews listed the names of 3 or 4 important exits or destination cities and the remaining distance motorway in the format "xxx km" for orientation. Carrying paper road maps was common at that time. Anyone who drove from Salzburg to Wels (trade fair city, then 40,000 inhabitants) had to know to take the "Sattledt" exit (today exit 195) (2,000 inhabitants) so as not to detour about 30 km via the Traun exit (in Haid, today exit 174) to have to do. Only locals knew that about 12 km after Sattledt there was a useful departure option for "back to Wels" from the (parking lot in Allhaming (today expanded as Exit 183 / Allhaming, parking spaces moved to NE)). The barriers to the company access simply remained open there.

Usually "400 m" or "250 m" before the start of the exit, there was a sign indicating the exit and the distance. At the start of the exit there was the largest board, but a blunt rectangle with a sloping right side, so that an approximately 60 ° pointed corner was created on the top right. An arrow on the board at an angle of about 45 ° pointed into this corner. For example, it was labeled "AUSFAHRT Sattledt". Later a board "Exit ->" was mounted at the tip of the division.

In the 1980s, a small additional sign "EXIT xxx" was placed on top of various exit signposts.

toll

In Austria , tolls have been mandatory on all motorways and expressways since 1997 . The exception to this is the section of the Stockerau expressway S 5 between the Jettsdorf junction and Krems an der Donau , which has not yet been expanded to four lanes . The obligation to pay a toll or vignette is announced by a corresponding sign at the entrance to the motorway or expressway.

Tolls up to 3.5 t

For motorcycles and vehicles under 3.5 tons GVW there is a motorway vignette, which is available as a 10-day, 2-month or annual vignette. In addition, there are six special toll routes that are exempt from the vignette requirement. Here the fee is to be paid directly at the toll station or in advance ( video toll ).

On November 13, 2019, the National Council decided to exempt certain motorway sections from the time-dependent toll. This regulation came into force on December 15, 2019 and is to be evaluated after one year. The following routes are affected:

  • A 1 West Autobahn: State border at Walserberg - Salzburg Nord junction
  • A 7 Mühlkreis Autobahn: Bypass bridges of the VÖEST bridge between the Hafenstraße and Urfahr junctions,
valid from the opening of the bypass bridges to the completion of the new Danube bridge in Linz
  • A 12 Inntal motorway: State border near Kufstein - Kufstein-Süd junction
  • A 14 Rheintal / Walgau Autobahn: State border at Hörbranz - Hohenems junction
  • A 26 Linz motorway (currently under construction)
valid until complete completion (connection to the A 7 at the Linz / Hummelhof junction)

Tolling over 3.5 t

The truck toll was introduced in Austria in 2004 , before that there was a separate truck vignette. Since then, vehicles over 3.5 tons have been tolled using a GO box, depending on the distance . The toll is collected using microwave technology, fully electronically and without impairing the flow of traffic. In order to prevent toll refugees, there are traffic bans for trucks on most of the low-ranking roads parallel to highways. Vignettes and GO boxes are available at petrol stations, among other places.

Current road network

Subnets

The current network of motorways and expressways consists of two subnetworks that are not connected to one another by an inner-Austrian motorway or expressway. The western sub-network includes the Inntal Autobahn A 12, the Brenner Autobahn A 13, the Rheintal / Walgau Autobahn A 14 and the Arlberg expressway S 16.

The eastern subnet includes the remaining motorways and expressways. The only motorway link between the two subnetworks is the Great German Eck and leads over German territory (from the West Inn Valley motorway A 12, border crossing Kufstein / Kiefersfelden , German Federal Highway 93 , Inntal , German Federal Highway 8 , border crossing "Big Walser mountain" , continue on West Autobahn A 1).

Highways

Roads designated as federal highway A are, with the exception of the Drasenhofen bypass, signposted as a motorway under road traffic law . The cross-sections are continuously equipped with four or more level-free lanes and structurally separate directional lanes and comply with the guidelines and regulations for road traffic . The Karawanken tunnel (A 11) and some feeder routes such as the Landecker tunnel (A 12) and the Bregenz city tunnel (A 14) are two-lane without separation, as is the Drasenhofen bypass , which is part of the A 5 but is classified as a car road .

Expressways

Since the Austrian road traffic regulations do not recognize an expressway , the expressways are signposted either as autobahns or motorways , depending on the state of development .

The expressways S 1, S 2, S 6, S 10, S 33 and S 36 are consistently ranked as a motorway in terms of road traffic law , the expressways S 3, S 4, S 5, and S 31 are only partially. The S 35 is a special case, which despite the cross-section of the autobahn and maximum speeds of up to 130 km / h is only signposted as a road due to the tight curve radii.

Immission Control Act - Air (IG-L)

Display of the speed limit in an IG-L zone by means of a traffic control system

On the basis of Section 14 of the Immission Control Act - Air (IG-L), in so-called “redevelopment areas” for “vehicles within the meaning of Section 2 (1) no. 1 KFG 1967 […] or for certain groups of vehicles […] speed restrictions and time and Spatial restrictions on traffic are ordered. ”Such“ measures for motor vehicles ”are legally implemented in the federal state by ordinance of the respective governor .

Ex-lege emergency vehicles and other specific vehicle groups are excluded from the time and space restrictions in accordance with Section 14 (2). This applies above all to vehicles that are used to secure and maintain state supply or whose operation is primarily in the public interest. Also excluded are "vehicles with a monovalent methane gas drive or exclusively electric drive as well as plug-in hybrid-electric vehicles that have a minimum range of 50 km with exclusively electric drive" (section 5) and "vehicles that are operated by holders of an ID card in accordance with § 29b StVO 1960 can be driven yourself or used as a passenger ”(Section 8).

The speed restrictions according to § 14 IG-L basically applied to all motor vehicles. The only exceptions are "emergency vehicles in accordance with Section 2 Paragraph 1 Z 25 StVO 1960 and vehicles of the public security service for journeys that are necessary for the proper performance of the service". Since November 23, 2018, vehicles with a purely electric drive or with hydrogen fuel cell technology, which are marked in accordance with Section 49 (4) Z 5 KFG and are operated on motorways or expressways, are excluded, provided that sufficient attention is drawn to this by means of signs.

The display of the maximum speed permitted in the event of increased pollution according to IG-L takes place on the motorways and expressways in most cases automatically by traffic control systems (VBA). The speed limits currently in force on motorway routes are listed below:
