history
The earliest written testimony is from 1080 and is "Ediltscah". The name goes back to the locative of old Slavic * sedlo (seat, settlement).
The community has had its current name since 1903, before that it was named after the town of Versbichl . Originally, Selzthal only meant a few agricultural farms at the foot of the local mountain, the 1738 meter high Dürrnschöberl, which housed the first residents. Little by little, workers from today's Czech Republic came to the valley to mine peat, which was used as fuel in the surrounding ironworks. It was not until the Kronprinz-Rudolf-Bahn was built around 1870 that it changed to the “railway community”, which the place is still considered to be today. As a result, Selzthal grew to a place with around 2300 inhabitants. The church of the community served as a template for the construction of the Catholic Church of the Name of Mary in Löbau, Saxony .
The Selzthal train station is the railway junction of the east-west and north-south intersection lines and is now supplemented by a motorway junction, which has helped the region to develop traffic. Many jobs in the station area were given up, which leads to a permanent decline in the number of inhabitants to just under 1750.
Selzthal is regarded as a cheap place to live with good quality of living on the outskirts of the district capital Liezen , which is also the regional center for training and trade. In a local history published in 2003, all current data and the historical development of the place, the economy and the clubs can be read. There has always been a special reference to one of the largest landowners, the Admont Abbey .
In economic terms, the ÖBB has set the tone for almost a century and has influenced almost all developments in the village.
The Graz ↔ Salzburg railway connection also makes Selzthal an important hub for express train services within Austria . However, trains in this traffic relationship must be overturned in the station (turn around, change the direction of travel), which requires a stop . Trains between Graz and Linz can continue without turning. The planned Selzthal loop , which was supposed to avoid stopping the trains from Graz and Salzburg (and Germany), was never built due to complaints from residents.
