When the district of Gröbming was founded in 1873, the judicial districts of Irdning, Gröbming, Bad Aussee and Schladming became part of the newly founded district on June 30, 1873.

Until 1976 the judicial district area of Liezen remained almost unchanged at 426.12 km². In the course of the amalgamation of several judicial districts, the neighboring judicial district of St. Gallen was dissolved and merged with the judicial district of Liezen on October 1, 1976. As a result of the “Styrian District Courts Ordinance” of the federal government, the neighboring judicial district of Rottenmann was dissolved on July 1, 2002 and its area was merged with the judicial district of Liezen. The judicial district of Liezen was enlarged by the seven municipalities Gaishorn am See , Lassing , Oppenberg , Rottenmann , Selzthal , Treglwang and Trieben to 1,391.75 km².

On July 1, 2013, the Irdning judicial district was dissolved and the municipalities were incorporated into the Liezen judicial district.

With effect from January 1, 2015, the judicial district was redefined in the "District Courts Ordinance Styria 2015" due to the changes in the framework of the municipal structural reform in Styria . This gave the district the area of the former municipality of Hieflau .
