Weng im Gesäuse (until 2003: Weng bei Admont ) was a municipality with a last 586 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2014) in the judicial district or district of Liezen in the state of Styria . Since January 1, 2015, it has been merged with the communities of Hall , Johnsbach and Admont as part of the Styrian community structural reform , the new community bears the name "Admont". Since then, this new market town of Admont has around 5,000 inhabitants and an area of ​​300 km².

Weng im Gesäuse is located in the eastern Admont Basin and in the Gesäuse National Park, which has been in existence since 2002, in the Liezen district in Styria. The highest mountain in the former municipality is the Große Buchstein at 2224  m .

Structure of the former municipality

The municipality comprised the following two localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Gstatterboden (42) including Gstatterboden-scattered houses
  • Weng im Gesäuse (530) including Buchau, Geiergraben, Kletzenberg, Schröckendorf, Schwaighof and Steinfeldsiedlung

The community consisted of the Weng cadastral community .

Neighboring communities or places are Admont , Hall , Hieflau , Johnsbach , Landl , St. Gallen and Weißenbach an der Enns .

In the district of Gstatterboden is the point of Austria furthest from the state border ( 47 ° 35 ′ 30 ″  N , 14 ° 38 ′ 0 ″  E ).

history

Weng is mentioned in a document in 1135. Weng Church was built in 1393. The Admont oversaw the church over many centuries, but could the temporary spread of Protestantism not stop in the area. Only with the Counter Reformation and expulsion was the Catholic Church able to assert itself again. The abolition of the manorial lords took place in 1848. The local community as an autonomous body was established in 1850. In 1889 a fire destroyed the church in Weng, and in 1890 it was rebuilt.

In 1923, Dr. Finze the Schröckhof and built an alcohol distillery there in 1928. After the " Anschluss of Austria " in 1938, the community became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark . In 1939 the operation of the alcohol factory was stopped. At the end of 1944, the Hitzel metal construction factory from Marburg an der Drau was relocated to the closed factory. In 1945, Weng was occupied by the Americans. 1945 to 1955 Weng was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria. The Hitzel metal construction factory later became part of the Palfinger Group .

The Gesäuse National Park was created on October 26, 2002 , which is why the community was renamed.

coat of arms was awarded with effect from June 1, 1989. Description of coat of arms: In blue between two silver strips, the upper one sparged twice, a red field sprinkled with silver tufts of grass, inside a striding silver marten.
