Heinrich Purkarthofer

Heinrich Jakob Purkarthofer (born March 28, 1934 in Dörfl , Sankt Johann bei Herberstein ; † February 24, 2005 ) was an Austrian historian, archivist and heraldist .

Life

Heinrich Purkarthofer attended the Pestalozzi-Gymnasium Graz and studied history, German philology, geography, education, psychology, Indo-European studies and philosophy at the University of Graz from 1955 . In 1961 he completed his dissertation with The Herberstein Rulership in Styria from the beginning of the 16th century to 1628, with special consideration of economic and social conditions.

Heinrich Purkarthofer initially worked for a year and a half at the Austrian Post and Telegraph Administration . At the beginning of 1965 he became an employee of the Styrian Provincial Archives under archive director Fritz Posch . From 1965 to 1968 he was trained in the 51st course at the Institute for Austrian Historical Research in Vienna , was able to attend lectures on folklore at the University of Vienna and collected Styrian sources in Vienna's archives for the state archive. During this time he was also a key contributor to the preparation of the Styrian state exhibition The Styrian Farmer in Graz in 1966. His state examination paper dealt with Mons Predel . Contributions to the history of the settlement between the middle Mur and Raab .

In the regional archive in Graz, Heinrich Purkarthofer took over the advice in the reading room Bürgergasse and answered questions of property history as well as cadastral and land registry matters. He also took over the care of the Herberstein family archive as the successor to Burkhard Seuffert and Friedrich Wilhelm Kosch . In 1977 he succeeded Reiner Puschnig in the community heraldry department. He created more than 200 designs of coats of arms in an impressive manner, five of them for communities in Burgenland, with archival research and discussions with community representatives beforehand and celebratory lectures at the award ceremony afterwards. Purkarthofer published numerous analyzes of settlements and corridors and created concordances on the Maria Theresa, Josefin and Franzisze cadastres.

Heinrich Purkarthofer was appointed archivist in the State Archives in 1969, senior archivist in 1971, archivist in 1972 and senior archivist in 1975. In 1985 he succeeded Franz Otto Roth as deputy director of the state archive. In 1993 the state government appointed him a member of the examination committee for the middle service in the state archive, the state library and at the museums. After the retirement of Director Gerhard Pferschy , Purkarthofer managed the state archive on an interim basis from January to July 1996. At the end of 1999 he retired.
