The Institute for Austrian Historical Research ( IÖG ) at the University of Vienna is a historical research institute that has been part of the University of Vienna since January 1, 2016. Until December 31, 2015, the IÖG was a federal institution and was subordinate to the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy . In research and teaching, prior to the integration into the University of Vienna on January 1, 2016, there was already close cooperation with the University of Vienna, which offers a master’s degree with a focus on historical auxiliary sciences and archival science . Among other things, the institute publishes the renowned journal Mitteilungen of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research (MIÖG).

The institute was founded in 1854. From 1920 to 1945 it was called the Austrian Institute for Historical Research . Even after incorporation into the University of Vienna, there is a legal guarantee of existence for the institute in Section 40a of the University Act.
