Karl Brunner (historian)

Karl Brunner (born November 14, 1944 in Freistadt ) is an Austrian historian .

Karl Brunner studied history, philosophy and German studies at the University of Vienna from 1962 to 1968 and then obtained a doctorate in philosophy at the humanities faculty. In 1978 he qualified as a professor , became an associate professor in 1983 and a professor for medieval history and historical auxiliary sciences at the University of Vienna in 2000 . From 1996 to 2003 he was managing director of the Institute for Reality Studies of the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. From 2002 to 2009 he was director of the Institute for Austrian Historical Research .

Brunner's research areas were within the medieval history and auxiliary sciences of history the Material Culture, everyday and mentality history , environmental history , social history of the early and high Middle Ages and philosophy of science . In 2009 he retired. In 2007 he was honored with the Science Prize of the State of Lower Austria . In 2018 he was awarded the Wilhelm Hartel Prize for his achievements in medieval history, in particular in real life .
