The Buchsteinhaus is a refuge of the Friends of Nature Austria ( TVN ) in the Ennstal Alps . It is located at an altitude of 1546  m above sea level. A. in the so-called Krautgartl at the height of the tree line below the southwest side of the Großer Buchein high above the Enns .

history

Already in the first editions of his guide book, the "father of the Gesäuses" Heinrich Hess reported about the fabulous view on the Hohen Krautgartl. However, Hess had to wait a few more decades until the Buchsteinhaus could be used as a base in 1924, because several applications for a building permit, which was only granted in 1921, had previously failed. The starting point for the construction work was the former Pichlmayeralm on the Brucksattel. From there, the serpentine feeder path was first built. For three years, 200 helpers hauled vast amounts of building material, including 258 larch trunks, entire wagon loads of wood and hundreds of kilograms of brick and cement to the construction site. On August 10, 1924, the hut was opened as a house for friends of nature on the Großer Buchstein .

In 1979 the house was taken over by the St. Pölten Naturefriends in the care of the Steyr local group. It was the year in which the severe winter clogged the foundations so much that the house threatened to collapse. In the course of the renovation, a slightly larger kitchen and spacious laundry and work rooms under the terrace were created. With the construction of the Pfannl-Maischberger via ferrata on the south face of the Großer Buchein, an unexpectedly high flow of visitors began. The management by chain wagons became increasingly difficult and so the long-awaited material ropeway was built in 2006. After a corner of the house sank shortly afterwards, the house could no longer be saved and was therefore ripe for demolition. In the years 2008 to 2010, an expensive, architecturally demanding new building was carried out. The new Buchsteinhaus now has two cozy dining rooms, large bedrooms and a panoramic terrace. Regional products are used in the kitchen.

ways

View of the Großer Buchstein from the Gesäuse

Approach

The approach is from the Ennstal from Gesäuse Straße (parking lot at the National Park Pavilion) via the Brucksattel ( 1117  m ) in around three hours. It is more difficult to get to the hut from the former Eisenzieher inn in the municipality of St. Gallen . This ascent leads through the Große Billbachtal to the foot of the Admonter Frauenmauer and below the western slopes of the Buchsteinstock crossing to the hut in around 5 hours.

Mountaineering

The hut is the only base for climbing the Großer Buchein and the Admonter Frauenmauer. The western and southern slopes of the Buchsteinstock lead to a variety of routes in all difficulties, all of which are in the area of the hut, such as. B. Normalweg, Wengerweg, Südgrat Klettersteig and Buchstein Westgrat.

Transitions to other huts

All transitions to other huts are made by descending into the valley.
