history

The west of Graz initially belonged to the judicial district and was given its own judicial district by a ministerial ordinance in 1854 through the establishment of the municipal-delegated District Court I. Section, to which the area of Graz on the right bank of the Mur was subordinated. Simultaneously with the District Court I. Section, the District Courts II. Section (for the area of Graz on the left bank of the Mur) and the municipal-delegated District Court III. Section for the Graz area has been set up.

On January 1, 1867, the two municipal-delegated district courts I. and II. Section were merged, after which they formed the judicial district of Graz .

The west of Graz was subordinate to the District Court for Civil Law Matters Graz I (Graz City) and was part of the Graz judicial district. With the abolition of the two district courts for Graz city and surroundings and the establishment of a joint district court for civil law matters in Graz, the previous judicial districts of Graz and Graz surroundings were merged to form the Graz judicial district.

This status remained until the beginning of the 21st century. On January 1, 2007, the National Council decided to set up a further district court with the official name Graz-West, whereby the previous district court of Graz was renamed Graz-East.

As a result, the Graz districts IV. Lend, V. Gries, XIII. Gösting, XIV. Eggenberg, XV. Wetzelsdorf, XVI. Strassgang and XVII. Puntigam left the previous Graz judicial district and was assigned to the Graz-West judicial district. The remaining area of the Graz judicial district has since formed the Graz-Ost judicial district.

On July 1, 2013, the Frohnleiten judicial district was dissolved and the communities assigned to the Graz-West judicial district.

With effect from January 1, 2015, the judicial district was redefined in the "District Courts Ordinance Styria 2015" due to the changes in the framework of the municipal structural reform in Styria . In the course of this, the area of the former communities Tyrnau and Tulwitz was given to the judicial district of Weiz .
