The Homestake Mining Company was one of the largest gold mining companies . The US company was founded in 1877 and was important in gold mining from the 19th to the 21st century. In 2002 it was taken over by the Canadian Barrick Gold Corporation .

Homestake was the company that opened the oldest gold mine, the Homestake gold mine in Lead , South Dakota . The Black Hills gold deposit, located on Sioux land , was discovered by Moses Manuel, who in 1876 staked a claim known as Homestake. This gold mine was purchased by George Hearst and two partners for US $ 70,000. They founded the Homestake Mining Compagny in 1877 and made this gold mining the most important in the world for the next 100 years. In 1879 shares in the company were issued and it became the longest listed company on the New York Stock Exchange .
