Peggau is a market town with 2335 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) north of Graz in the Graz-Umgebung district in Styria ( Austria ).

Geographical location
Peggau is located about 15 km north of the provincial capital Graz in the Middle Mur Valley on the edge of the Grazer Bergland . Peggau is separated from the neighboring municipality of Deutschfeistritz by the Mur .
Expansion of the municipal area
The municipality stretches from the banks of the Mur to the mountains of the mountain Stocks Tanneben up m to the 910th In the municipality is the Peggauer Wand , a steep, cave-rich wall.

The municipal area comprises two cadastral communities or towns with the same name (area 2016, population as of January 1, 2020):
- Friesach (259.90 ha, 242 Ew.) Including Hiening and Lantschbauer

history
Numerous finds, starting from the Stone Age, have been recovered from the caves in the area. Bronze Age finds from the Badlhöhle as well as a Roman Age hill settlement on the Kugelstein document a continuous settlement.
An early medieval Carolingian burial ground dates from around 800 AD , which was cut and partially exposed in 1987 during canal excavation work.
It was first mentioned in a document around 1050. The original spelling is Peka or Peckach , the name could be derived from the Slovenian word peč , which means “ rock” or “cave” from Pötsche .
The castle and the lordship were owned by the Lords of Peggau (Peckach) , who later also acquired Pfannberg Castle and called themselves Counts of Pfannberg . Around 1270 the castle was destroyed by King Ottokar II Przemysl .
Around 1301 there was already a road toll, which was not released until 1800. Until 1740 there was also a water toll on the Mur for raftsmen. Market rights were granted before 1576. However, this is the first secured date.
On his famous walk to Syracuse in 1802 , the German travel writer Johann Gottfried Seume came through Peggau. He wrote:
“In Vienna, and everywhere along the way, it was said that the Presburger Post had been attacked, plundered and the postillon and the conductor killed. The same thing happened at Pegau, not far from Graez. […] Bey Röthelstein complained a compatriot, with whom I walked a mile, about the damage caused by the wolves and lynxes that came down from the mountains. The snow was high and the cold was cutting, and I hurried to Pegau […] But the quarters were so sad that I had hardly come across them on the whole trip. "
The Badlwandgalerie was built from 1843 to 1844 , in whose vaults the southern railway and above it the Reichsstraße ran.
In 1893 the first gravel works (today W&P) was opened. From 1894 there was intensive research into the Lurgrotto .
After the First World War , intensive phosphate mining took place in the Badlhöhle and the Peggauer wall caves as part of the Austrian cave fertilizer campaign . A total of 86 railway wagons could be funded.
From August 17, 1944 to April 2, 1945, a branch of the Mauthausen concentration camp was set up on expropriated property belonging to the Vorau Abbey near Hinterberg . At the foot of the Peggauer Wand , a tunnel system was put into operation for the underground relocation of parts of the aircraft parts and armor production of the Thondorf plant of Steyr-Daimler-Puch AG . A memorial was erected in 1955 and a memorial was inaugurated on March 24, 2006. ( 47 ° 11 ′ 53.7 ″ N , 15 ° 21 ′ 34.4 ″ E )
On July 15, 1975, a devastating flood caused great damage in the municipality. During this flood, the climbing systems in the Lurgrotte were also destroyed. The tour through the cave to Semriach had to be stopped.

Peggau is very well connected in terms of traffic. The Bruck expressway S 35, which can be reached via two junctions, runs through the municipality . This takes about two kilometers to the Pyhrn Autobahn A 9 via the Deutschfeistritz junction (165) and the Grazer Straße B 67.
In Peggau, the Peggau-Deutschfeistritz station is on the southern railway . From the train station there are hourly express train connections S1 to Graz and Bruck an der Mur . In addition, the local railway Peggau – Übelbach of the Styrian State Railways branches off from the main line as S11, it runs every hour to Übelbach .
The Graz Airport is 30 kilometers away.

Churches
- The altarpiece of the Catholic Church in Peggau was painted by Johann Cyriak Hackhofer around 1700 and has been preserved to this day.
- The Protestant Peace Church was built in 1906 by Otto Bartning .
Buildings
- The Badlwandgalerie was part of the route of the Südbahn in the Badlwand area. After the route has been laid, it is in the process of decay.
- Peggau Castle
Natural monuments
- The most famous destination in Peggau is the Lurgrotte . One- and two-hour tours as well as adventure tours are offered on the well-secured path.
- The Repolust cave is located north of Peggau in Badlgraben. Here you can find the oldest traces of human existence in Austria (around 300,000 years).
- The Badlhöhle is also located in the Badlgraben.
- The Mitterbach waterfall below the castle ruins.

Mayor of the municipality is Hannes Tieber (home list Peggau). The entrepreneur (Tieber GmbH) was elected mayor on October 4, 2017, after serving as a local councilor for 13 years.
