history
Ubelbach is first mentioned in the first half of the 13th century as Ubilpach and is probably named after the stream of the same name. The market was built in the same century after silver was discovered in the valley . However, silver mining stopped around 1500.
It was not until the 18th century that Übelbach developed a certain level of prosperity through the operation of hammer mills , which found a favorable location through the use of water power and the wooded surrounding area. The ore was brought from Upper Styria . The iron was brought into the Murtal on rafts and transported there by carts .
In the meantime, a paper mill was built next to the hammer mill in the Guggenbach district . Since this operation was dependent on resources from outside the valley, the railway line to Peggau was built, which, however, led to the decline of the hammer mills. The railway has been running regularly between Peggau and Übelbach since 1919.
After the Second World War , the paper mill perished in competition with larger companies and finally ceased operations in 1972. At the same time, however, the upswing of the Gaulhofer company began, which produces doors and windows and which has taken over all employees of the paper mill.
The local community as an autonomous body was established in 1850. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community came to the Reichsgau Steiermark, 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

coat of arms
The silver mines in the Übelbachtal are reflected in the coat of arms of the market in Übelbach, which is attested as early as 1590: on a purchase letter issued in 1612, the seal over a flooded shield river ("Bach") shows a silver bar with hallmarks placed on its edge. This silver bar later became a silver cube with four eyes as a result of misunderstanding, as the market coat of arms in use today shows.
An official award took place on November 1, 2016 with the following blazon (description of the coat of arms):
- "Above a silver, blue-flooded corrugated shield base in red and silver, the side of a cube-shaped silver bar with four black, circular marks, placed on a point."
