Nestelbach bei Graz is a municipality with 2640 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) east of Graz in Styria in Austria .

geography

Geographical location

Nestelbach bei Graz is located about 13 km east of the provincial capital Graz in Eastern Styria in the Graz-Umgebung district . Nestelbach borders in the south on the Schemerl ridge, a watershed between the rivers Mur and Raab . The municipality is located in the eastern Styrian hill country , which is characterized by narrow and elongated ridges - so-called Riedel .

The Nestelbach , which gives it its name , consists of two tributaries from different sources and flows into the Laßnitzbach , which flows into the Rabnitz , a tributary of the Raab. The valley exit with its flat slope towards the town of Gleisdorf in the east of the village is also the direction of the outflow of the Nestelbach. In all other directions there is a steep incline towards the Schemerl Ridge. In the north is the cadastral community of Mitterlaßnitz, which is separated from the main town by a riedel running from west to east. The Laßnitzbach runs through Mitterlaßnitz, coming from the neighboring municipality of Laßnitzhöhe , into which the Nestelbach flows into the Gleisdorf municipality. The southern part of the municipality, the former municipality of Edelsgrub , is drained southwards by the Stiefing .

Community structure

The municipality includes the following eleven localities (population in brackets as of January 1, 2020):

  • Edelsgrub (675) including Edelsbach, Kesselgraben and Kolmegg
  • Shepherd's Field (153)
  • Kogel Book (90)
  • Lambach (26)
  • Langegg village (120)
  • Mittergoggitsch (216)
  • Mitterlaßnitz (243) including Mitterlaßnitzberg and Mitterlaßnitzstrasse
  • Nestelbach near Graz (888) including Brunn-Schaufel, Kogelbuch, Nestelbachberg and Schemerlhöhe
  • Obergoggitsch (163)
  • Lower book (38)
  • Fence stone (28)

The community consists of four cadastral communities (area 2016):

As a type of settlement, Nestelbach forms a clustered village, so it has an irregular floor plan with a central town center, the neighboring houses of which are closely arranged around two squares. The center is formed by the church square with the parish church and the municipal office and the village square a little lower down. In the west, on the cemetery ridge, and in the east, in the direction of Gleisdorf, the cluster village tapers off to a street village due to lack of space . Like the rest of the municipality, Mitterlaßnitz is a scattered settlement with farmsteads that are set apart. In Nestelbachberg and Mitterlaßnitz, however, these groups accumulate in larger groups.

Incorporations

The municipality of Mitterlaßnitz was incorporated into the municipality on January 1st, 1959, Langegg and Edelsgrub on January 1st, 2015.

Neighboring communities

Clockwise, Sankt Marein bei Graz borders on Nestelbach bei Graz in the south-east and south, Empersdorf in the south, Vasoldsberg in the south-west, Laßnitzhöhe in the west and Eggersdorf bei Graz in the north. geology

The municipality of Nestelbach is located in the Styrian Tertiary Basin in gravel deposits, which are known as Schemmerl gravel (after the Schemmerlhöhe south of Nestelbach). These deposits are dated to the Pannonian in the Miocene ( Neogene ) and are therefore around 11 to 7 million years old. As a geological level , this age corresponds to the Torton . The gravel is by its content of pebbles from limestone and vertebrate residues ( Vertebratenfaunen known). This layer is a river deposit in a south-easterly direction from the Alpine region north of Graz. These deposits form northwest-southeast-directed flat terrain back ( Riedel ), which (here: the valleys of the major rivers Mur and Raab ) separate from each other.

This layer is followed by the “Gleisdorf layers”, which were formed from the remains of the deposits from an ingression of the Paratethys Sea into the East Styrian Basin. This “sea beach on the eastern edge of the Alps” was created in the course of the tectonic uplifts and subsidence during the final construction of the Alps and contains multiple shifts in the coastlines of this Miocene sea at that time .

history

In the year 860 Nestelbach was mentioned for the first time as "Nezelinpah" in a deed of donation from King Ludwig the German to the archbishops of Salzburg . At that time Nestelbach was on the border with Carantania , which is formed by the Schemerl Ridge (previously called Mons Predel ). After the Hungarian invasions, Nestelbach was incorporated into the newly founded diocese of Seckau in 1218 . This gave the property as a fiefdom to knights, one of whom Georg von Nestelbach was mentioned in a document in 1351. After the Turkish and Hungarian invasions at the end of the 13th century, the Nestelbach estate was temporarily extinct. The place name “Nostelbach” or “Nöstelbach” appears on the Vischer map from 1678, a survey of the country. The Buckerlberg, on which the first traces of settlement were found, is called "Buckl am Eckh". In the Josephinische Landesaufnahme of 1787 the place name used today "Nestelbach" is already registered.

Over the centuries, Nestelbach was at the time of Empress Maria Theresa a defensive area and was now part of the Freiberg family. The first settlement mentioned was located on the Buckerlberg , which has belonged to the municipality of Laßnitzhöhe since 1950 . According to the Styria Chronicle , Nestelbach is the oldest surviving German-speaking place name in Styria.

The German writer Nina d'Aubigny von Engelbrunner (1770–1847) moved to the Erkoschlösschen (also "Bethanien" or "Bethanien-Kloster") in Brunn, municipality of Krumegg near Graz , after the death of her nephews Eduard and Georg Horstig in 1828 , and thus close to her sister Emilie. Here she ran agriculture and cattle breeding and largely withdrew from social life. She died in 1847 and was buried in the Nestelbach parish cemetery near Graz.

After the Second World War, efforts were made to adapt the parish hall as a cinema. In 1948, a Fargel suitcase was installed in the theater. In spite of the permission to show from January 19, 1949, the projector and the cinema never went into operation.

On January 1, 2015, the former municipalities of Langegg near Graz and Edelsgrub were merged with Nestelbach as part of the Styrian municipal structural reform ; the new community still bears the name "Nestelbach bei Graz".

The parish church of Nestelbach is dedicated to St. James the Elder. A church was first mentioned in the 9th century in Nezilepach in Hengistgau as a branch of Gleisdorf . In 1446 an older church in the Gothic style was built on an inaccessible hillside location, a little below the current building, and was first mentioned in a document. This building was surrounded by a cemetery that was later abandoned. After landslides with associated water ingress, the dilapidated church had to be removed and replaced. In the years from 1779 to 1783 the new building was carried out in the late baroque style . The parish church in Laxenburg in Lower Austria served as a model .

The cemetery was rebuilt around the new church. The area of the Nestelbach parish grew steadily through allotments from neighboring parishes and amalgamation. The old cemetery around the church exceeded its capacity. For reasons of space, it was relocated to the ridge above the parish church. In the 1930s and 1940s, the last grave inscriptions were removed from the church wall. The last general renovation of the church took place in 1993. In 2008, the restoration of the organ gallery to its original state was completed.

Parish church

The high altar of the parish church comes from the first half of the 18th century by the sculptor Johann Jacob Schoy . After the abolition of the Poor Clare Monastery in Graz, the high altar was brought to Nestelbach. There it had to be adapted to the limited space available and was significantly reduced in size, the remainder was divided into the Welschen Kirche on Grazer Griesplatz. The figure decorations have also been reduced. The portrait of Saint James the Elder , designed by the painter Felix Barazutti from Graz, depicts the saint with his symbols. The high altar is rounded off by a group of figures depicting the Trinity : God the Father , Son and Holy Spirit.

The tabernacle from the Rococo is located at the base of the high altar and was inserted at the last comprehensive Church restoration 1993rd It originally comes from the Mürzhofen Church. The carving on the door depicts the crucifixion scene of Christ surrounded by Mary, Mary Magdalene and Saint John . In the center of the high altar is a sculpture depicting Mary with the child. This is called "Maria Schutz" and was the destination of many pilgrimages at the end of the 18th century . The two large side figures on the edge of the high altar were designed in 1913 by the sculptor Peter Neuböck (1865–1928). On the left is St. Clement Maria Hofbauer , on the right the statue of St. Notburga .

The pulpit by the sculptor Veit Königer also comes from the Poor Clare Monastery in Paradeis , which was closed in 1784 . It is located on the left front side of the central or main nave . On the front there is a coat of arms with the inscription “Donor Maria Archduchess of Austria, born Duchess of Bavaria 1602” . This refers to the founding year of the Poor Clare Monastery in Paradeis by Archduchess Maria von Bayern. On the pulpit parapet, three figures represent the Pauline virtues of faith, hope and love . The upper end of the roof of the pulpit is St. Bernardine of Siena with the monogram IHS framed by golden rays of sunshine .

The two side altars in the aisle of the church come from Graz-St. Peter . They were created in 1648 by the sculptor Sebastian Erlacher . The neo-Gothic figures are only partially preserved. At the base of the right side altar there is a statue of St. Florian on the left , the heart of Mary in the center and St. Margaret on the right. Above is a painting of Saint Leonhard , flanked on the left by Saint Catherine and on the right by Saint Barbara . The conclusion is the archangel Michael fighting with Lucifer . On the left side altar, the center of the base is the representation of the Heart of Jesus . To the left is Saint Elisabeth and to the right is Saint Theresa of the Child Jesus . The picture above, painted by Felix Barazutti , shows Maria and her mother Anna . The left side altar is closed with the three plague saints Sebastian , Rochus and Judas Thaddäus .

The vaults were designed with frescoes relatively late in 1934. The Walter brothers from Ilz provided the ornaments and the Graz painter Franz Mikschowsky (1873–1936) designed the figures by the Graz painter Ludwig Ritter von Kurz zum Thun and Goldenstein (1850–1939). Above the high altar is a representation of God the Father, Jesus Christ, the Mother of God Mary and Joseph. The four church fathers are depicted in the vault of the central yoke and the four evangelists in the vault of the choir yoke . Further frescoes are on the balcony parapets with the depictions of Saint Margaret Alacoque , Saint Aloisius and above the main portal that of Saint Konrad von Parzham .

One of the oldest pieces in the parish church is the late Gothic crucifix by a Leoben master from around 1520. In 1950, four new bells were cast by Ernest Szabo in Graz, of which the big bell weighs 1140 kg and is consecrated to the heart of Jesus . The bell was renewed in 1980.

The old organ was built in 1909 by Konrad Hopferwieser in Graz and had nine registers. This makes it one of the smaller instruments and was unsuitable for the church interior, both in terms of its disposition and its location. After renovations of the organ in 1993 and 2000 (midification of the keyboard and expansion of 20 electronic stops, with the original stops remaining fully playable), severe damage to the wind chest and wooden pipes led to the decommissioning of the Hopferwieser organ in 2012 and to be replaced by a digital organ (Rodgers 588). On March 30, 2019, an organ concert by the German organist Barbara Dennerlein took place on the initiative of Christian Wessely .

On the outside of the choir is a Marian monogram by Adolf Osterider .

Johannes Nepomuk in Nestelbach

In Nestelbach there are two depictions of Johannes Nepomuk. The listed figure shrine of the bridge saint, who was drowned in Prague in 1393 , stands directly on the newly designed staircase to the parish church. In addition to the sacred building, it is the second listed building in the Nestelbach community. The wayside shrine once stood in the immediate vicinity of a bridge under the valley crossing of the Südautobahn before it was moved to Nestelbacher Dorfplatz and finally to its current location. The second depiction by an unknown artist is on the Schemmerlhöhe at the junction to Vasoldsberg in a little Marterl.

War Memorial

On a hill in the north of Nestelbach there is a large wooden cross in a fence . Together with the wooden plaques bearing the names of the fallen and missing soldiers in the region, it is a reminder and memorial of the First and Second World Wars . The ensemble is a prominent place in the community. On the days of death of the fallen, it is visible from afar. From the so-called “Heldenkreuz” there is a good view of Nestelbach. It is both the destination of religious processions in the church year and of profane wanderings.

Chapels of the parish of Nestelbach

Surname description image
Mitterlaßnitz village chapel The chapel of the former municipality of Mitterlaßnitz, now the cadastral municipality of Nestelbach, was built in 1850 as a village chapel for Christian teaching. The bell, which is located in the wooden tower, was hidden in the straw of a neighboring farmer during the First World War and thus escaped being melted down. During the Second World War, this project happened in a curious way: you took off the rope that was attached to the bell and denied its existence. At the end of 1979 the village chapel was renovated because the wetness had damaged the foundation walls and the roof structure and the building was in danger of collapsing. In June 1980 it was re-consecrated and provided with an electric bell. Village chapel Mitterlaßnitz.jpg
Donatus Chapel Langegg The chapel consecrated to St. Donatus is located in the former municipality of Langegg near Graz . Today's village chapel was built by the brothers Franz and Josef Oswald from 1855 to 1858. It is said to be a scaled-down replica of the Nestelbach parish church and is 8 meters wide, 12 meters long and 18 meters high. The chapel is a building with a late Biedermeier tower facade. On the altar there is a picture of St. Donatus, who had spared the village from a severe storm. Above the tabernacle there is the statue “Maria with the Child”, a replica of the Mariazell image of grace . There are 56 additional seats in the interior and twelve in the choir gallery. The tower, the roof of which was pointed open in 1907, houses two bells. Donatus Chapel Langegg.jpg
Edelsbach Chapel The chapel in Edelsbach, which lies between the villages of Edelsgrub and Krumegg , was built in the 18th century. The property was originally owned by the Riegersburg and the builder was called the master baker. The original chapel was demolished in 1968 due to road construction. The new building began in 1970 and was completed with the inauguration ceremony in 1972 by Pastor Neumann. In 1995 the Edelsbach chapel was renovated and in August of the same year it was consecrated by Pastor Friedrich Tieber.
Steinberg Chapel The chapel bears the Patrizonium of the Sorrowful Mother is also known under the name Pfeiffer Chapel and was built in 1700 and is located in the area of the political community Vasoldsberg in the district Steinberg. The statue of the Sorrowful Mother , which was purchased in 1840 for the price of a bucket of lard, is located in the interior. The vulgon name of the chapel is "Haaspeter" and this is noted on some maps. Extensive renovation work took place in 1957 and 1987, with the consecration of bells taking place on September 22, 1957 . The electric bell was only installed in 1989 due to lack of funds. Steinberg Chapel Sorrowful Mother.jpg

Culture and sights

music

The brass band Nestelbach was founded in 1850 as village music and Ignaz Fellner was its first conductor from 1860 to 1880. During the two world wars, the association's activities were interrupted until, through the merit of Kapellmeister Wolfgang Hold, the young musician joined the association . Franz Binder has headed the Musikverein since 1977, under whose leadership the rehearsal hall and the new musicians' home in the Nestelbacher Bauhof opened in June 2000.

Sports

  • The Nestelbacher football club HC (Hobby Club) Nestelbach was founded in 1990. Since there was no sports field in the village at that time, the team had to switch to the football field in the neighboring municipality of Laßnitzthal . Since the establishment of a square behind the elementary school, HC Nestelbach has organized an annual Whitsun tournament. In 2000 HC Nestelbach was expanded to include the youth teams sector, which was dissolved again in 2006. In 2001 the foundation stone was laid for a club house on the Nestelbach sports field. Construction began in autumn 2002. The house was completed in October 2004 after two years of construction.

Legends and sagas

Some sagas and legends are told about the founding of Nestelbach. The first is about a severe storm and flooding of the settlement in the " Buckelbauerngraben " . This settlement was therefore completely destroyed. The residents then looked for a safe place for a new settlement and found a picture of the Virgin Mary in a nettle thicket . They built a wooden chapel on the site around which the Nezilinpach settlement was built. The name comes from nezilla or nezzel and means nettle .

Another legend about the Nestelbach church reports the following: At the place where a wooden previous church stood, there was a statue of the Protection of the Virgin Mary . It was planned to build the new church on a hill on the Schemmerlhöhe and to keep the statue there. In the meantime, this has been taken from the dilapidated Bach chapel and hidden in a safe place. The next day, she had miraculously returned to her old place. This process was repeated many times and so the village community decided to build the new church on the hamlet not far from the original church building on which the current parish church stands.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

The south autobahn A2 runs for a distance of 3.1 km through the municipality and can be reached via the junction Laßnitzhöhe B 169, which is about one kilometer from the center. The townscape has been shaped by an approximately 280 meter long bridge since 1969. Shortly before the Laßnitzhöhe motorway exit in the direction of Graz there is also such a bridge, which, in contrast to the first one, is almost invisible due to the surrounding forest. The state road L 384, the "Nestelbachstraße", leads through the village, which branches off from the L 305 at the Schemmerlhöhe and joins the L 365 in Laßnitzthal.

There is no train station in Nestelbach. The closest train station is 4 km away in Laßnitzhöhe and offers access to the Styrian East Railway with hourly S-Bahn connections to Graz and Fehring . The railway line on Nestelbacher municipality is 2.55 km long and leads through Mitterlaßnitz.

The Graz Airport is 18 km away.

Until 1998, the Red Cross shared the premises with the Nestelbach volunteer fire brigade near Graz and with the Florian Graz-Umgebung warning and alarm center (today in Raaba ), which was given its own fire station in 2000. In 2001 the building was converted. On May 18, 2008, the Nestelbach branch celebrated its 30th anniversary.

The Nestelbach Red Cross supplies around 5,500 households in twelve municipalities. The fleet consists of four emergency vehicles. Nestelbach kindergarten

Kindergarten
Elementary school

The premises of the old kindergarten were in one of the houses right next to the parish church. The first mixed-age group was introduced in 1976. Because of the increasing number of kindergarten children, a new building for two groups was built next to the elementary school in Nestelbach in 1987. In 1998 the capacity was expanded to include three mixed-age groups and in 1999 all-day care was introduced. There is also a day nursery for children between the ages of zero and three.

Elementary school in Nestelbach

An elementary school has existed in Nestelbach for more than 200 years. The old rooms were in a building next to the church. The increase in population made a new building necessary, which was built in 1974. The elementary school on Schulstrasse was expanded in 1999. The sports field is behind the school. For several years now there has been a playground designed by the parents' association in the playground.

The public library of the community of Nestelbach is currently on the premises. It was previously housed in the basement of the rectory and later next to the municipal office on the church square.

All previous municipalities had a municipal coat of arms. Due to the amalgamation of municipalities, these lost their official validity on January 1st, 2015.
The municipality of Nestelbach near Graz carried its coat of arms from March 1st, 1964 to December 31st, 2014. The blazon read:

"In the green shield there is a silver wave bar, which is accompanied by two crossed golden bishop's staffs at the top and a silver nettle leaf at the bottom."

The two crossed bishop's staffs remind us that we belong to the Prince Archbishopric of Salzburg . The nettle leaf and the stream stylized as a silver lining stand for the place name Nestelbach.

  19. Nestelbacher Nachrichten, Issue 2, December 2017: “The basic colors of the former coats of arms were black and red (Edelsgrub and Langegg) and green (Nestelbach). [...] The fox, which has already been found in the Langegger coat of arms, symbolizes [...] on the one hand this [...] native animal, but also the great son of the community, the baroque composer and court music director Johann Joseph Fux (1660–1741), who was born in Hirtenfeld . The new municipality of Nestelbach is the only Styrian municipality that has a fox in its coat of arms [...] At the same time, the [...] coat of arms is a so-called "speaking coat of arms" because the name of the community is reflected in the coat of arms with a little imagination: together with the silver nettle leaves and the [...] golden bar, which is to be understood as a brook, is the community name "Nestelbach" - after all, one of the oldest German-speaking place names in Styria - symbolized in the coat of arms.
