history

The first mention of Fehring comes from the Ottokar land register of 1265 with around 40 farmsteads. The district of Petzelsdorf is already mentioned in the Babenberger Urbar 1220. In 1305 a vicar parish of the main parish Riegersburg is documented in Fehring . The layout of the place was designed as a market from the beginning, in 1362 Rudolf the founder granted market rights. The sovereign market in the border region has an eventful history and often suffered from warlike influences, as the close border to today's Burgenland used to be that to Hungary . There were Heiduken (1605) and Kurruzen incursions in the years 1704–1711.

Large fire damage from the years 1571, 1605, 1621 and 1735 is documented, whereby almost the whole place was destroyed in the latter fire. Then the houses were bricked up.

Historical special position

Fehring was founded by the princely and belonged to the Fürstenfeld administration from the 13th century . The administration was at Stein Castle in Fürstenfeld and ran the business on behalf of the sovereign. That was the cornerstone for the fact that the legal position of the Fehring market was different from that of other princely cities and markets that were directly subordinate to the sovereign.

This special legal position meant that the market was pledged more often than others and the pledge holders tried to turn the market into a patrimonial market (one subject to the manorial system). Attempts were also made to force the citizens to use the robot , from which the citizens were exempt from sovereign markets.

Since 1800

Fehring station in 1910

With the opening of the Styrian Eastern Railway , which was part of the Hungarian Western Railway , the town of Fehring was opened up by the railway on May 1, 1873. Thus, from Fehring on the one hand the Styrian capital Graz, where there was a connection to the Austrian Southern Railway , and on the other hand the Hungarian half of the monarchy could be reached by rail.

Fehring station: round shed and locomotive turntable

With the construction of the Fehring – Fürstenfeld local railway, which was part of the later Thermenbahn , Fehring station became a railway junction on October 1, 1885. Fehring was not connected to the capital Vienna from October 12, 1910 until the thermal baths were further developed and the Wechselbahn , which connected to the Aspangbahn in Aspang-Markt , was completed . The position of the station subsequently required the expansion of the railway systems as well as the construction of a separate roundhouse with its own turntable, which is still in use today to park locomotives. When tourism was at its heyday, there were also express and express trains running between Vienna and Graz, which stopped in Fehring as scheduled.

In World War II Fehring was severely destroyed.

Surname

The first documentary mention is 1265 as Voringe and then around 1300 as Vorinch , 1305 as Vering, Voringe , 1409 Faering "... Middle High German 'vorhe' for Föhre".

A more logical attempt to explain it would be the derivation of borovnik (a) or borinije Slavic for "Föhrenhain". The derivation from the front in the Gau , which is sometimes found, is to be rejected as unscientific according to the chronicle of the township, written by Josef Desput, as this derivation refers to later modifications from 1461. Legends tell of a pine ring or thicket that was planted for defense, from which the name is said to come.

mayor

At the constituent meeting of the municipal council on April 22, 2015, the pharmacist Johann Winkelmaier (ÖVP), who had already headed the municipality until December 31, 2014 and was then appointed as government commissioner, was re-elected mayor of the municipality.

The city senate also includes the first deputy mayor Franz Fartek (ÖVP), the second deputy mayor Hans-Rudolf Rath (SPÖ), the community treasurer Ignaz Spiel and a city councilor. A post of the city council is divided into three so that all districts have a chance. Walter Wiesler is a city councilor for the first 20 months, followed by Walter Jansel and Rudolf Kainz.

Municipal council

By amalgamating the municipalities, the municipal council was increased from 21 to 25 seats. Following the results of the 2015 municipal council elections, these will be filled by the following parties:

There was criticism that, despite 25 local councilors, Ute Schmied, Daniela Adler-Neubauer and Heidemarie Kniely, only three women got a chance on the council. Before that, the proportion of women was four out of 21 local councilors.

The last municipal council elections brought the following results:
