Religions

The parent parish Riegersburg was created around 1140 as one of the oldest parishes in Eastern Styria. The first sacred building in Riegersburg was a small Maria Magdalena church, first mentioned in 1170, on the east side of the castle rock next to the former main parsonage. The construction of today's parish church of St. Martin began as a late Gothic new building on the south-facing castle entrance in 1481 under Reinprecht von Reichenburg , but had to be stopped around 1500 due to lack of money. The completion fell in the time of the Reformation , the pastor Matthias Weinreben (* 1517; † 1554) with the support of the lord of the castle Hans von Reichenburg was able to complete the church in 1520. The pastor could not prevent the spread of the Protestant faith, however, after years of changing Lutheran and Catholic -minded pastors, a uniform teaching in the parish church only came back to the parish church with the onset of the Catholic Counter-Reformation from 1598.

In the 17th century, today's weekday chapel was added and the tower was renewed. This is a three-storey, square brick wall construction with round-arched sound windows, the end is a small onion dome. The church was restored in 1884–1886, and in 1979 a total renovation was necessary. a. the church stalls and the floor were renewed and the windows were newly glazed. The last renovation of the church tower was completed in 2004.

The right of the Riegersburg rulership to propose the respective main pastor has been exercised regularly since 1653 and was only put back in 1979 by the Liechtenstein family. Also in 1979 the seat of the main pastor was moved from the old rectory in the northern area of the market to the newly built rectory near the parish church. In addition to the parish of Riegersburg, the parish also includes parts of the parishes of Kornberg, Lödersdorf, Auersbach and Hatzendorf.
