Halbenrain is a market town with 1,731 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the southeast of the Austrian state of Styria in the judicial district of Feldbach and in the political district of Southeast Styria .

Geographical location

Halbenrain is located at an altitude of 220 m in the so-called Styrian Vulkanland , around five kilometers west of Bad Radkersburg .

The municipality includes ten cadastral (two uninhabited, originally the municipality Abstall were lying in Slovenia today) and is divided into eight same villages (in brackets: Area status December 31, 2019 and Population as of January 1, 2020):

  • Donnersdorf (642.53 ha; 126 Ew.) Including Oberau and Unterau

  • Hürth (638.90 ha; 111 Ew.) Including Kreuzberg

  • Oberpurkla (461.06 ha; 302 Ew.) With large karter and Kröpflschneider
  • Sögersdorf (59.33 ha)

Incorporations

On January 1, 1965, the communities Dietzen, Donnersdorf, Dornau, Drauchen, Hürth (part) and Oberpurkla were merged with Halbenrain. The community Unterpurkla was incorporated on January 1st, 1969.

Halbenrain was first mentioned in a document in 1244.

On January 1, 1985, the municipality was given the designation "Marktgemeinde".

  • In 2002 the Styrian extreme cyclist Wolfgang Fasching set a 24-hour world record in the individual time trial of 856 km in Halbenrain. As a result of this tradition, Halbenrain is also an annual stopover at the Race Around Austria , an extreme bike race along the border roads around Austria.
  • Football is played in the Union Raiba Halbenrain sports club, or SVU Raiba Halbenrain for short. The tennis court in Halbenrain has been in operation again since 2014. There are ice rifle clubs in Halbenrain and Unterpurkla .

The municipal coat of arms was awarded with effect from August 1, 1981. The blazon of the coat of arms reads:

"In black a jumping silver stag over a diamond-shaped braided silver thorn fence growing from the base of the shield."
