history

In 1386 Goritz was mentioned for the first time as "Guritz". The name goes back to the Slavic gorica (small mountain, hill). In the 14th century Goritz (Guritz, Goricz, an der Goriczen) was owned by the Krabatsdorfer, a noble family resident in Grabersdorf . From 1446 the property was dedicated to the parish Gnas, with whom it remained until 1848. In that year, the landlords were abolished. The local church as an autonomous body was established in 1850.

In order to distinguish the two localities with the name “Goritz” in the district, the name “Deutsch-Goritz” was used from the 19th century at the latest, in contrast to “Windisch-Goritz” (today Goritz near Radkersburg ). The place name was spelled with a hyphen until the Second World War (Deutsch-Goritz).

After the end of the First World War, there were disputes with the Ljubljana National Government for Slovenia and Istria (“Narodna vlada za Slovenijo in Istro”) about the area's territory. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community became part of the Reichsgau Steiermark. At the end of the war, the place was temporarily occupied by Bulgarian and Yugoslav troops. 1945 to 1955 the area was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

Culture and sights

Deutsch Goritz Church
The altar of the parish church
  • The first chapel in Deutsch Goritz was started in 1873 and completed in 1889. In 1902 it was expanded to a church. In the course of the expansion, a monastery of the Kalasantine congregation was added. In 1904 and 1910 the church was expanded and it had become too small. In 1913 a theater and assembly hall was built.
  • In 1957 a new municipal office was built. A new community center was built in 2009/10.
  • Deutsch Goritz has inns, local shops and a skate park.
  • On April 1, 1913, the theater and assembly hall was opened for use. Since then, theater has been performed in Deutsch Goritz with interruptions of only a few years. The hall was also used for film screenings, lectures and various celebrations. After the Second World War, the hall also served as a public cinema from 1949 to 1969. For years, the German Goritz Music Association's Christmas wish concert was performed in this hall. During the church renovations in 1989 and 2003, masses and church events were held there. Currently, theater is played once a year (in November) (four performances). The hall is also used for various events at the secondary school or a traveling cinema.
  • The Musikverein Deutsch Goritz was founded in 1926. It originated from the Young Styrian Federation. After the Second World War, Johann Auer took over the musical direction of the band in 1946 and rebuilt it. He held this office until 1996. In the same year the new music center was inaugurated, where rehearsals have been taking place ever since. The Musikkapelle Deutsch Goritz has been organizing a Christmas and New Year's wish concert every year since 1972, at which modern music is presented in addition to the typical songs of brass bands. Since 2009 this concert has been taking place in the new gymnasium of the Neue Mittelschule (previously in the theater).

Sports

The USV Deutsch Goritz played from 2008 to 2013 in the regional league south-east.

coat of arms

Both predecessor communities - Deutsch Goritz and Ratschendorf - had a community coat of arms . Due to the amalgamation of municipalities, these lost their official validity on January 1st, 2015. The first award of the coat of arms to the municipality of Deutsch Goritz took place on October 1, 1972 by Governor Niederl
The blazon (description of the coat of arms) read:

"In the silver shield there is a green pole with a golden ear, in front of a blue lily, behind by a blue spring."

The lily stands for the parish church, the fountain for the Peter spring, the ear of wheat for the predominantly agricultural character of the community.

The award of the municipal coat of arms to the (old) municipality of Ratschendorf took place with effect from November 1st, 1954. The spade stands for the manorial rule of the lords of Graben until the 16th century, "... in the black field a silver bar ..." refers to the Lords of Wallsee , who bought the Weinburg lordship in 1308.

The new municipal
coat of arms for the merged municipality took effect on February 10, 2017. The new coat of arms combines elements from the two coats of arms of the previous municipalities . The new blazon reads:

"In the double-split shield in the middle field on silver a blue three-shell spring spring, in the flanks on each pole in red a silver grave stone placed on the handle on the right, a golden stalked ear of corn on the left in green."

The grave stone ( shovel ) stands for the Lords of Graben , the former landlords of Ratschendorf, the fountain for the Peterquelle, the ear of wheat for the predominantly agricultural character of the community.
