history
Celtic burial grounds and Roman coins indicate a Celtic and Roman settlement in the area in ancient times. In the early Middle Ages , Slavs, Avars and Hungarians shaped the eventful history of the region. An intensive German settlement was only after the conquest of Eastern Styria by Emperor Heinrich III. possible in 1044.
The first documented mention of St. Stephen goes back to the year 1269. At the time of settlement, St. Stefan, together with Kirchbach , Wolfsberg and Jagerberg, belonged to the mother parish of Sankt Georgen an der Stiefing .
On June 1, 1948, the name of the community was changed from Sankt Stefan im Rosenthale to Sankt Stefan im Rosental . The market survey took place on August 1st, 1954, in 2004 the Sankt Stefaner tried unsuccessfully for the town charter.

coat of arms
Blazon : In the silver shield under a narrow green shield head a five-petalled, red, gold-inseminated rose.
Explanation: As early as the first half of the 13th century, the Hagegker family had built a castle and a village in St. Stefan. The rose (heraldry) should have been chosen as a symbol for this landscape and for St. Stefan in the coat of arms of this sex. The rose already played an important role in the Middle Ages. The name of the vineyard Rösenlein is proven as early as 1400. The Hagegk coat of arms with the five-petalled rose in an original document from 1390 is preserved in the seal of Rudolf II von Hagegk . This is now in the castle archive in Greinburg in Upper Austria. On the occasion of the market survey in 1954, the five-petalled rose was chosen to be the coat of arms of the market town of St. Stefan im Rosental.
By resolution of January 11, 1955, the Styrian state government granted the municipality of St. Stefan im Rosental the right to use a municipal coat of arms with effect from February 1, 1955. Due to the amalgamation of the municipalities, the coat of arms lost its official validity on January 1st, 2015. The re-award took place on December 1, 2015.
