Franz Dobusch (born May 9, 1951 in Raab ) is a former Austrian politician and was Mayor of the Upper Austrian capital Linz from January 21, 1988 to November 7, 2013 . With a term of office of more than 25 years, he was the long-serving mayor of Linz .

Career

The social democratic mayor comes from a conservative family. His parents, Sudeten German refugees, were farmers and sympathized with the ÖVP . From the age of five Dobusch lived in Styria . There he attended the Academic Gymnasium in Graz (humanistic branch), which he did not graduate. After a short time as an unskilled worker in Germany , he wanted to start a new life and came to Linz in the summer of 1969 more by chance than consciously. He found his first permanent job as a secretary in the Don Bosco parish and enrolled in the workers' secondary school, where he discovered his sympathy for the socialists . In 1971 Dobusch graduated from secondary school with the Matura .

From 1971 to 1973 he studied mathematics and physics , from 1973 to 1977 law at the Johannes Kepler University Linz . On April 27, 1977 he received his doctorate in law.

Professional career

From 1975 to 1978 Franz Dobusch was a study and contract assistant at the Johannes Kepler University in Linz. He was then head of the legal and organizational department of the university administration until 1981. Until 1988 he was director of the university for artistic and industrial design in Linz .

In 1975 Dobusch became a member of the SPÖ .

After having been a member of the Linz municipal council since 1985 , Franz Dobusch became mayor of Linz in 1988 as the successor to Hugo Schanovsky . At the age of 36 he was the youngest mayor of a state capital in the Second Republic .

In addition to his work as mayor, Dobusch was also district party chairman (until November 29, 2013) and regional party chairman's deputy (until November 23, 2013) of the SPÖ and chairman of the finance, school and constitutional committee of the city of Linz.

He was also chairman of the supervisory board of Linz AG , Linzer Veranstaltungs GesmbH (LIVA) and Design Center Linz Betriebsgesellschaft mbH (DC-B).

As mayor of Linz, Dobusch approved the swap deal no. 4175 between the city of Linz and BAWAG PSK, which is now pending court .

The debt level of the city of Linz has increased twenty-fivefold since Dobusch took office in 1988 from 44 million to 1,100 million euros. On the other hand, there are environmental measures to improve the air in Linz, in the social area the expansion of crèches, after-school care centers, kindergartens, old people's and nursing homes and in the cultural area in which the Lentos Art Museum and the Ars Electronica Center were built.

Private

Franz Dobusch is married to a teacher. The couple have two children. According to his own statement , his hobbies are tennis , fishing and sauna .
