Straden is a market town with 3,510 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the district of Southeast Styria and the judicial district of Feldbach in Styria . On January 1 , 2015, the former municipalities of Hof bei Straden , Krusdorf and Stainz bei Straden were incorporated as part of the municipal structural reform in Styria .

Community consolidation

1969/72

On January 1st, 1968, the previously independent municipalities of Hart bei Straden, Kronnersdorf, Marktl, Nägelsdorf, Schwabau, Waasen am Berg and Wieden-Klausen were merged with the municipality of Straden by ordinance of the Styrian regional government. On January 1, 1972, Waldprecht , which belonged to the previously independent municipality of Haselbach -Waldprecht, was divided between the municipalities of Straden and Deutsch Goritz . The first elected mayor was Johann Wonisch (Wieden), Johann Rauch (Straden) was elected as his deputy.

2015

On January 1, 2015, the market town of Straden was expanded again. The Styrian state government approved the resolution of the previously independent municipalities of Hof bei Straden, Krusdorf and Stainz bei Straden to merge with the municipality of Straden by ordinance of October 24, 2013 (LGBl 32/2013, No. 129).

As early as January 1, 1968, the former municipalities of Karla, Neusetz and Radochen were incorporated into the municipality of Hof bei Straden.

history

After a pastor of Merin was mentioned for the first time in 1188, the village of Marktl was first mentioned in 1265 as a market belonging to Merin Castle ("Forum Merein"). Because of the constant threat from the east, trade and industry could not develop. In 1445 only twelve of 37 farms were left in 1265. Nevertheless, until 1848, Marktl was the seat of the regional court "am Straden".

In the 15th century, the name Straden, which is common today, began to be used instead of the name Merin. In 1460 the old parish church in Straden burned down. Presumably between 1480 and 1513 the new church Sankt Maria am Himmelsberg was built. The Sebastian Brotherhood was founded in 1517 and the construction of the double church a few meters further south , which was used as a charnel house until the 17th century, is likely to be connected with this . At the same time, Straden was expanded into a tabor with the construction of a defensive wall up to ten meters high , with the help of which the Straden people successfully defended themselves against the Heiducken in 1605 .

From the 17th century pilgrimages to the church of St. Maria am Himmelsberg began and the number of the parish population also increased, so that another church was built ( St. Florian Church ). The itinerant preacher Johannes Anton de Lucca died on August 16, 1714 and was buried in the parish church.

The post office had existed since 1851 and the gendarmerie post since 1870. Between 1886 and 1938 there was a monastery and a private girls' school run by the school sisters from Graz- Eggenberg in Straden.

At the end of the First World War , the Straden doctor Willibald Brodmann founded the Lower Styrian Farmers Command , which was of particular importance in the struggle to define the border between the Republic of Austria and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia ( SHS state until 1929 ).

Towards the end of the Second World War , Straden was a frontline area. The church tower of the parish church was badly damaged by German artillery fire in 1945, but also the community itself. This is reminiscent of the cannon barrel of a German cannon, which is set up a little to one side on the edge of the main square in Straden.

The construction of the secondary school (1949) and the construction of the water pipe (1955–1958) were the first major projects during the reconstruction period.

In 1969 the construction of the sewer system began. In 1971 a small swimming pool was built.

The public drinking water supply for the entire community was completed in 1997. Until then, the local fire brigades had to supply households with water. On June 1, 1998, in the presence of Governor Waltraud Klasnic, the cultural center with 642 square meters of event space, built with support from the EU , was opened. In the first year it already attracted around 10,000 visitors to various events.

Until 2012, Straden and Hof bei Straden were in the Radkersburg district , Krusdorf and Stainz bei Straden in the Feldbach district .

In the constituent meeting of the municipal council on April 22, 2015, the municipal employee Gerhard Konrad (* 1957, ÖVP) was elected mayor and sworn in by District Captain Alexander Majcan. Konrad was elected to succeed Alfred Schuster in 2009 and was in charge of the community until December 31, 2014. Because the municipality merger, he was from January 2015 to re-election as a government commissioner used.

The community board also includes the first vice mayor Rudolf Lackner (ÖVP), the second vice mayor Rudolf Monschein (FPÖ), the community treasurer Karl Lenz (ÖVP) and the board member Siegfried Bauer (ÖVP).

The Styrian Provincial Government was awarded the municipal coat of arms in 1972. The market survey of the now larger municipality was carried out in October 1973 with a resolution by the Styrian Provincial Government.
