geography
Geographical location
Bad Gleichenberg is located about 42 km southeast of the provincial capital Graz and 9 km south of Feldbach on the eastern edge of the Styrian hill country . Between these almost parallel chains of hills of the Riedel, almost all the streams drain south to the Mur , which in turn belongs to the Drau / Danube river system. Only beyond the Gleichenberger Kogeln does a stream flow north to the Raab .
geology
Geologically, the environment is shaped by the alternation between the early Tertiary hill country, Quaternary sediments in the parallel valleys and the Eastern Styrian volcanic chain of the Miocene. The latter includes the double peaks of the Gleichenberg ( 598 m ) directly north of the village and the Stradnerkogel ( 609 m ) about 3 km in the south. They are part of the elongated Trans-Danubian volcanic region that extends from Slovenia over the hill country and Burgenland (Pauliberg) into the Pannonian lowlands .

In addition to the alkaline muriatic sources of the resort itself (Konstantin-, EMMA, Werle source Roemerbrunnen) rises in the nearby the renowned against chlorosis Klausener Stahlquelle and popular as a luxury drink and plenty sent Johannis fountain , an alkaline acidulous . The export of all sources amounts to approx. 250,000 bottles, the annual visit of the health resort 4200 people. Other treatment remedies are: carbonic acid baths, spruce needle baths and inhalations, swimming pool with cold water healing facility, milk and whey cure etc. G. with its surroundings is rich in beautiful points, including the Archduke Johann Monument, the Parapluie with panoramic view, the old G. Castle, the volcanic, wooded double cones of the Gleichenbergs , the imposing rock of the Riegersburg with its beautiful castle, the Schlossberg of Kapfenstein and the basalt plateau of the Hochstraden . history
The first traces of settlement go back to the Neolithic Age and probably have to do with the good water quality. About 5,000 years ago, a small village was built on the Wickenberg hill near today's center, the oldest village in Styria to be discovered. A number of clay pots, stone axes and hammers from the pile-dwelling period were discovered in 1872 .
The Gleichenberg healing springs have been used at least since Roman times . The so-called Roemerbrunnen they found a well-preserved 1845 in four meters deep wells ring , including Roman coins 74 and 12 fossilized hazelnuts from the 1st to 3rd century. Chr.
The castle Gleichenberg ( Burg Alt-Gleichenberg ) was first mentioned in 1185 as Glichenberch under a castle administrator Hermann. It had stood north of the Klausenschlucht gorge since around 1170 . The suppression of the Styrian aristocratic conspiracy brought about the destruction of the castle in 1268. The remains of the castle can now be recognized as the Meixnerstube . From 1292 with pledging until 1312, the lordship of Gleichenberg passed from the Lords of Wildon to the Lords of Walsee .
In the 14th century, the people of Walsee built Neu-Gleichenberg Castle opposite the old former castle south of the hermitage . It came into the possession of the Trauttmansdorff family in 1581 , became known for several witch trials (crimen magiae) and was expanded into a castle in the 17th century. Badly damaged by acts of war, it was acquired by the Stubenberg family after 1945 , but was finally destroyed by a fire in 1983.
Development into a health resort
From 1830 to 1848 Matthias Constantin Capello was Count of Wickenburg (1794–1880) Governor of Styria. In 1833 the Graz doctor Dr. Werlè (a brother-in-law of Archduke Johann) paid attention to the springs and their healing properties. Count Wickenburg was immediately taken with the scenic beauty and mild climate of the place and decided to make it generally accessible as a health resort .
Wickenburg, a close friend of Prince Metternich , laid the foundation stone for the Curbad Gleichenberg on May 10, 1834. In 1841, construction of the church (completed in 1845) and the Bad Gleichenberg monastery began . In 1888 both were handed over to the Franciscans . But it was not until 1940 that Gleichenberg became an independent parish supervised by the Franciscans .
Bad Gleichenberg was built in the Biedermeier period. It was founded during the reign of Emperor Franz I, when the town was developing, ruled by Emperor Franz Joseph I. On June 22, 1926, the spa town was given the epithet Bad .
On May 1, 2008, the new spa with spa and hotel (Life Medicine Resort of the Kurhaus Bad Gleichenberg ) was opened. The treatment of diseases of the airways and respiratory tract as well as the skin (neurodermatitis and psoriasis) remains the focus. The cold chamber for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain and migraines is a novelty. With this therapy, the patient spends around three minutes at minus 110 degrees to relieve his pain.
