The Alt-Gleichenberg Castle was a castle of the Lords of Riegersburg-Wildon on a ridge to the left of the Klausenbach in what is now the municipality of Bad Gleichenberg in Styria . Remains of the Alt-Gleichenberg Castle, called Meixnerstube , can be found in what is now the dry biotope nature reserve at the Klausen quarry .

history

Gleichenberg Castle was owned by the Lords of Riegersburg-Wildon. The property extended from far north of the Raab to the south, where the Mur turns to the east. Seen from Gleichenberg, the property of the Lords of Wildon was the area south of the Mur-Raab watershed. The Wildonians also owned the Riegersburg . Gleichenberg had them administered by a loyal man named Hermann, who was referred to in a deed of donation on July 24, 1185 as "Herman de Gleichenberch".

The Wildonians first stood under the rule of the Bohemian King Ottokar II (1232–1278), who was Duke of Styria from 1261. Herrand II von Wildon apparently joined the Styrian aristocratic opposition with his brother Hartnid after the ban on building castles in 1265. The suppression of the Styrian nobility conspiracy brought about the end of Alt-Gleichenberg Castle in 1268. Herrand II von Wildon not only had to spend 26 weeks in prison, but also had to surrender his three castles; the Alt-Gleichenberg castle was destroyed. On September 19, 1276, Herrand II was a prominent co-signer of the Reiner Oath , with which the Styrian nobility confessed to Rudolf von Habsburg (1218–1291).

When Albrecht I von Habsburg was enfeoffed with Styria and Austria in 1282, the Styrian nobility sought confirmation of the national freedoms related to the Georgenberger Handfeste . They were joined Hartnid III. by Wildon . He was defeated and was subsequently forced to pledge Gleichenberg to the Lords of Walsee in 1292 . In 1312 the rule of Gleichenberg finally came into the possession of the Walsee after they had acquired the Riegersburg at the turn of the century .

In 1312 the people of Walsee chose the ridge on the right side of the Klausenbach in Gleichenberg for the new construction of Neu-Gleichenberg Castle .
