history

The legend: How Bierbaum got its name.

There was a magnificent pear tree in the Auersbach area. The journeymen met there again and again and talked about their experiences and adventures. When they had rested under the shady pear tree in order to go back to the shoemaker's pony, they shouted to each other: "We'll meet again next year at the pear tree!"

When three vagabond journeymen named Burannerl, Burmichl and Burjoga met at this pear tree, they were so impressed by the lovely area that they decided to give up their wandering life in order to become settled farmers. They built the first houses.

This is how the place was created according to the legend and got its name from the once mighty pear tree, which is said to have stood in front of the Fröhlich house (today Wagist) a few decades ago.

Historical facts

The abolition of the manorial lords took place in 1848. The local community as an autonomous body was established in 1850. After the annexation of Austria in 1938, the community came to the Reichsgau Steiermark, 1945 to 1955 it was part of the British zone of occupation in Austria.

In the cadastral community of Bierbaum there was still a reference to the settlement history in the 21st century: There was a "Bauerngmoa", the "Bauerngut Bierbaum". Its land was owned jointly by the owners of several (partly former) farms. The ownership shares were not assigned to persons in the land register, but rather linked to the ownership of the properties of these farms (the so-called “master properties” in the land register). This distribution of ownership was based on documents from the 1880s. The designation is proof that these areas are remnants of a village common property ( common property ), such areas were referred to in Bavarian usage as "G (e) mein". They existed in many places that arose in the 12th or 13th century and are indications of a planned settlement of an area, the framework conditions of which were determined by an authority. From the late Middle Ages, however, these communal areas were mostly divided up among those entitled due to discrepancies or their area was assigned to new farms (chaste, Huben). This also proves the relatively small size of the properties recently. A division procedure was initiated via the Bauerngmein, in the course of which the individual plots of land were divided up among other properties and the property (whose deposit number 110) was deleted from the land register.
