The Schneider 320 mm Mle 1870/93 was a French railway gun .
history
The Mle 1870/93 was born out of necessity: Due to a lack of heavy and super-heavy artillery , the French high command decided to use coastal artillery and superfluous fortress artillery on railway carriages. This was done by the Schneider arms factory. The result was the Mle 1870/93. The gun was used from 1914 until the end of the war in 1918 and was scrapped in 1920.
technology
Schneider did not use a pipe return system in its construction. The pipe hung on reinforced trunnions. The recoil was absorbed by the brakes on the mount . After a few shots, the weapon had to be pulled back to its starting position. The weapon had no lateral directional area, so the track system was laid out in a curve in order to adjust the direction of fire.
