The Canon de 4 modèle 1858 (also known under the names Canon de campagne de 4 , Canon rayé de 4 , Canon de Lahitte 4 ) was a French muzzle loader - field gun .

The constructors were Colonel Lahitte and Commandant Treuil de Baulieu.

By order of Emperor Napoleon III. the 4-pounder gun with bronze barrel and field tripod made of wood "mle 1858" was introduced in 1858. The Lahitte system used 4 kg grenades.

It was used during the Sardinian War in 1859 and was also used during the Franco-Prussian War , such as the Battle of the Hallue and the siege of La Fère .

In addition to the wooden field gun carriage, iron fortress carriages were available:

  • as a wall gun with box spar mount and large wheels
  • as a casemate gun with frame mount and small wheels

The guns were retired in 1874 and replaced by the Canon Lahitolle de 95 mm and the Canon de 90 mm modèle 1877 . Nevertheless, at the beginning of the First World War , specimens were still available in various forts of the Barrière de fer (for example in Fort du Saint-Michel (Toul) ); they were used in the capons to cover the trenches.
