La Fere is a French commune with 2,859 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Laon , the community association Chauny Tergnier la Fère and the canton Tergnier .
geography
La Fère is located between two arms of the Oise , about 25 kilometers south of Saint-Quentin and 25 kilometers northwest of Laon . The Sambre-Oise Canal runs to the west of the municipality .
history
On January 1st or 3rd, 898, Odo of Paris , King of France since 888, died in La Fère .
During the Wars of Liberation , the city was besieged by Prussian troops (3rd Army Corps) on February 27, 1814. La Fère capitulated after two hours of fire after the powder magazine was hit. Values of several million thalers were stolen in the city.
During the Franco-Prussian War , the city was besieged by German troops from November 5th to 27th, 1870. The siege ended with the surrender of the crew.
During the Second World War, several were in La Fere POW camp of the armed forces . The associated state rifle units were housed in the village, among other things.
From 1793 until the nationwide reorganization of the cantons in 2015, La Fère was the capital (French: chef-lieu ) of the canton of La Fère .
