Vauxaillon is a French municipality with 540 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France ; it belongs to the arrondissement of Laon and the canton of Laon-1 (until 2015: canton of Anizy-le-Château ).
geography
Vauxaillon is located about 17 kilometers southwest of Laon on the Chemin des Dames and on the La Plaine – Hirson railway line . The river Ailette forms the northern boundary of the municipality. Vauxaillon is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Anizy-le-Château in the north and northeast, Pinon in the east, Allemant in the southeast, Laffaux and Neuville-sur-Margival in the south, Terny-Sorny in the southwest, Leuilly-sous-Coucy in the west and Landricourt in the Northwest.
history
At the end of May and beginning of June 1918, the German front stretched from here to Brimont for Operation Blücher-Yorck. The battle of the Aisne remained in a military tactical stalemate, even if the offensive was initially successful in the section near Vauxaillon. However, the attack by the German troops ultimately failed. During the Second World War , the Wehrmacht had a post built here for Erwin Rommel . The Battle of the Ailette took place here in May / June 1940.
