Étouvelles is a French municipality with 213 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France (before 2016 Picardy ). It belongs to the arrondissement of Laon and the canton of Laon-2 (until 2015 Laon-Sud ).

Étouvelles is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Chivy-lès-Étouvelles in the north, Nouvion-le-Vineux in the east, Laval-en-Laonnois in the south and the municipality of Vaucelles-et-Beffecourt in the canton of Laon-1 in the west.

history

On March 9 and 10, 1814, Étouvelles was the scene of fighting in the battle of Laon between the French army under Napoleon Bonaparte and the Prussian army under Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher .

During the First World War , the village was occupied by the German army from September 2, 1914 to October 13, 1918. In view of the suffering of the population in the four years of occupation and the damage to buildings, the place was awarded the Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 on October 17, 1920 .
