- the Oise-Aisne Canal (to the south).
history
Philip of Alsace , Count of Flanders and Vermandois , approved the first Chauny charter in 1167. Chauny is placed under the direct authority of the king in 1213; here the name Ville de Chauny appears for the first time ; until then the name was only associated with a château. The place is conquered in 1417 by the Bourguignons . Maria von Kleve, mother of the future King Ludwig XII. , who has been in Chauny for several years, dies in August 1487. She resided in the “Maison d'Orléans” near the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville. In 1557 a Spanish occupation destroyed the churches of Saint-Martin and Notre-Dame. Chauny was besieged by Spanish troops for four days in 1662. The Oise was navigable from Paris from the beginning of the 18th century; a little later, the Compagnie de Saint-Gobain installed a glass warehouse on the bank. During the revolution in 1789 both churches were destroyed again.
From 1840 the young Baptist pastor Victor Lepoids gathered believers around him, who in 1850 opened a Temple évangélique , a Baptist church, in the town. The church, which had about 80 people, was closed in 1852 by order of the prefect; it could not be reopened until 1866.
In February 1917 the town was blown up when the German army withdrew ( company Alberich ) - with the exception of the suburb of Le Brouage. From 1920 to 1930 Chauny was rebuilt.
