Samoussy is a French municipality with 387 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Aisne in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Laon and the Canton of Laon-2 .

geography

The community of Samoussy is six kilometers northeast of Laon . The Samoussy forest that surrounds the village is part of the Marais de la Souche et forêt de Samoussy nature reserve . The Autoroute A26 ( Calais - Reims ) touches the south of the municipality. The Laon-Athies military airfield used to exist in the west .

history

Samoussy was one of the royal palaces of the Carolingians (see Königspfalz Samoussy ). Pippin the Younger celebrated Christmas here in 766 , some historians even see Samoussy as the birthplace of Charlemagne . His brother and co-regent Karlmann spent the last months of his life here and died in Samoussy on December 4th, 771.
