Karlmann I.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karlmann I (* 751; † December 4, 771 in the royal palace Samoussy ; buried in Reims ), the son of Pippin the Younger and brother of Charlemagne , was King of the Franks from 768 to 771.

Life

Karlmann was anointed king in 754 by Pope Stephan II in the Abbey of Saint-Denis, together with his father Pippin and his brother Karl. After Pippin's death, he came to rule over the southern part of the Franconian Empire , from Burgundy and Aquitaine to Alemannia, in accordance with Pippin's will . On October 9, 768, the corresponding king anointing took place in Soissons .

Karl and Karlmann were evidently rivals early on and the relationship remained very tense in the period that followed. Relations worsened when Karlmann refused military aid to his brother in Aquitaine in 769; after Karl had triumphed there alone, this moved in the entire Aquitanian territory.

Karlmann was married to Gerberga . With her he had two children, Pippin (770 attested) and one other child. According to the historian Eduard Hlawitschka , this is said to have been Ida von Herzfeld . After Karlmann's unexpected death, Gerberga and her two children fled to the Longobard Empire and placed themselves under the protection of King Desiderius . However, they disappeared from the sources after 773/4, after they fell into the hands of Charles's followers. They were probably either eliminated or imprisoned to enable Karl to rule over the entire Franconian Empire.
